Michigan’s trip to Europe didn’t go according to plan, but it did end with a win. The Wolverines came back from 14 points down to beat Mega Superbet, 84-81, in Montenegro on Thursday evening. Trey McKenney (25 points) and Elliot Cadeau (15 points) led Michigan to the victory late, but it was Brandon McCoy Jr.’s injury 20 seconds into the game that will rightfully draw the headlines.

Michigan wraps up its European tour against Mega Superbet today in Montenegro. Mega is a Serbian professional club known for developing young talent and sending players to college and the NBA. The Wolverines and Mega have faced each other before, with Mega winning an exhibition in Spain in 2018. This year’s roster has another impressive batch of young talent and split a pair of exhibition games against Auburn in Mykonos earlier this summer.

Michigan’s international trip is off to an 0-2 start, with defeats against the Lithuanian national team and its reserve team. The Wolverines lost Moustapha Thiam to an early injury in game one and saw Trey McKenney sit out game two. That’s in addition to Ricky Liburd, Jalen Reed, and Lincoln Cosby sitting out. For a roster that’s best described as four proven college players and a lot of talented but hypothetical young depth, it makes sense that Michigan has been tested without two of its stars.

Michigan dropped its second game in Lithuania on Monday, falling short against the Lithuanian reserve national team by a final score of 82-77. The Wolverines were shorthanded without Moustapha Thiam, Trey McKenney and Ricky Liburd — all three “rested nagging injuries as a precaution,” per a U-M release — and Lincoln Cosby and Jalen Reed remained out as they continued their rehab. Michigan started strong for the second straight game but found itself playing from behind in the second half.

Michigan faces the Lithuanian B Team today at 11:30 a.m. Eastern in its second of three overseas exhibitions. The Wolverines fell to the Lithuanian A team on Sunday despite leading by 14 early in the second half, as Moustapha Thiam left early with an injury and most other key starters battled foul trouble. The Wolverines won the first two quarters and got impressive performances from many of their freshmen, but they also saw Moustapha Thiam leave the game in the first quarter with a lower-leg injury and were undone by foul trouble in the second half. Elliot Cadeau picked up his fourth foul early in the third quarter, which led to Michigan’s lead evaporating.

Michigan faces the Lithuanian National Team today at 12:30 p.m. Eastern in its first of three overseas exhibitions. The Lithuanians have rotated squads over the past week, with the top squad losing in overtime to Estonia, the reserve squad beating Arizona, and a mix of the top and reserve squads losing to Arizona. Today, the Wolverines are expected to face the top Lithuanian group — led by former Arizona star Ąžuolas Tubelis –in a final tune-up for their World Cup Qualifying game against Turkey.
