Almost three weeks after Dusty May’s shocking departure to the Dallas Mavericks, Michigan’s path forward has become clear. Mike Boynton Jr. signed a two-year deal and is officially Michigan’s head coach. The new Wolverine head coach has also secured pledges from 13 of 14 Michigan players to return and play for him this year. Here are five thoughts on the move and where things go from here. Michigan has removed Mike Boynton Jr.’s interim tag. The Wolverines announced Friday that Boynton has been named head coach and signed a two-year contract. The decision comes almost three weeks after Dusty May took the Dallas Mavericks job on June 22nd. Boynton had already been serving on an interim basis, but a formal plan for the future has been announced.

Incoming freshman forward Quinn Costello will stay at Michigan for 2026-27, he told Joe Tipton. Costello is a 6-foot-10 forward who was one of the breakout prospects in the 2026 recruiting class. He’s an elite shooter with intriguing size, and played his way onto the McDonald’s All-American team. He’s ranked 32nd in the class, per 247 Sports Composite.

The primary job for interim head coach Mike Boynton Jr. this summer is retaining the roster. The Wolverines had constructed one of the more impressive rosters in the sport this offseason, but Dusty May’s departure for the Dallas Mavericks means that it’s on Boynton to keep it together. Officially, the transfer portal will open on the 31st day after May’s departure — July 24th — or five days after a permanent head coach is announced.

Incoming freshman guard Brandon McCoy Jr. is staying at Michigan, as first reported by ESPN. McCoy is a five-star recruit ranked 13th nationally, per Rivals’ Industry Ranking, and committed to Michigan at halftime during the Final Four. McCoy is a 6-foot-5 guard with a 6-foot-11 wingspan who is known as one of the best defensive players in the class. He’s projected as a likely starter in Michigan’s lineup next to the returning backcourt of Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney.

Estrella will be a redshirt junior this season, with two years of eligibility remaining.

Incoming transfer big man Moustapha Thiam plans to stay at Michigan for 2026-27, as first reported by Jon Rothstein. Thiam is a 7-foot-2 big man who averaged 12.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks in 28.7 minutes per game last season at Cincinnati. He was viewed as one of the top big men in the transfer portal and should be crucial for anchoring the Wolverine defense.

Elliot Cadeau plans to stay at Michigan following Dusty May’s departure, he announced tonight. Cadeau was one of the best point guards in the country last season, averaging 10.5 points, 5.9 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game. He also earned Most Outstanding Player honors in the Final Four, helping Michigan to its first National Championship since 1989. Fellow guard Trey McKenney also announced his plans to return on Monday, tweeting “Victors always stay #HA1L #GoBlue”.
