Statistics by State News Release Contact: nass-media@usda.gov United States Hog Inventory Down Slightly (Washington D.C., June 25, 2026) – As of June 1, there were 73.7 million hogs and pigs on U.S. farms, down slightly from June 2025 and down slightly from March 1, 2026, according to the Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report published today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Contact: screwworm@usda.gov Washington, D.C., June 16, 2026 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is announcing funding for 40 breakthrough projects to bolster the nation’s defenses against New World screwworm (NWS). These innovative proposals, which will receive a combined total of about $105 million, promise to sharpen detection, accelerate control and eradication tools, and strengthen rapid-response capabilities.

Most dogs and cats in the U.S. are at low risk of NWS; risk is elevated for pets recently in areas with confirmed cases of NWS Washington, D.C., June 11, 2026—The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for generic Nitenpyram Tablets (nitenpyram) for the treatment of New World screwworm (NWS) infestations (myiasis) in dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens that weigh at least two pounds and are at least four weeks old.

Contact: screwworm@usda.gov WASHINGTON, D.C., June 9, 2026 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), alongside State partners in Texas and New Mexico, continues to lead an aggressive response to New World screwworm (NWS) in the United States. USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed a new case of NWS in a calf in La Salle County, Texas, bringing the total cases of NWS in the United States to six.

The New Mexico case was previously reported in Andrews County, Texas WASHINGTON, D.C., June 8, 2026 — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is sharing additional details about the epidemiological investigation into the case that was reported earlier today in Andrews County, Texas. While the veterinarian who reported the case is located in Texas, the dog resides at a household in Lea County, New Mexico.

Contact: aphispress@usda.gov Animal Health Officials Working Quickly to Protect U.S. Livestock and Wildlife WASHINGTON, DC, JUNE 03, 2026 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed the detection of a New World screwworm (NWS) in a bovine in Zavala County, Texas. NWS is a serious pest that affects livestock, pets, wildlife, and less commonly, people and birds.

USDA’s Economic Research Service Resource Requirements of Food Demand (RRFD) data product measures the U.S. food system’s annual use of water, energy, and employment. These data can be broken down by supply chain stages, food and beverage categories, and marketing channels, showing how and where resources are used from farm to fork.
