Coffee will be a lens on climate change, social life, health, North-South dynamics, social and economic justice, tourism and slavery. This course will examine all of that history as well how coffee is brewed. Taught by Robert Thurston.
Soaring Success: Conservationists celebrate bald eagles thriving in Channel Islands National Park
Erin Weiner examines bald eagle nests and configures research cameras on the Channel Islands as eagle project lead for the nonprofit Institute for Wildlife Studies (IWS), sometimes climbing to the tops of trees using ropes and special techniques. “In the fall I’ll hike out to the nests and then I’ll rig the tree, climb up into the nest and I’ll reset the camera if that nest was used that year, or I’ll move cameras if the birds have moved from that nest,” Weiner told the Ventura County Reporter.
More Than a Match: Ventura County soccer fans are creating their own World Cup experiences
As the match begins, a Ventura County restaurant is packed with soccer fans. Jerseys from different countries fill the room, flags hang from tables and walls, and every eye is locked on the screen. When a team creates a scoring chance, the crowd reacts instantly, cheering, shouting and celebrating together. While Ventura County isn’t hosting FIFA World Cup matches directly, local organizations and businesses are creating places where fans can experience the tournament together.
USHL Coming to VC: Hockey development league’s westward expansion plans include a Simi Valley franchise in 2027-28
Simi Valley could soon be home to a new ice hockey arena with room for thousands of fans cheering a United States Hockey League (USHL) team. The 16-team development league announced a six-team westward expansion on June 24 with four California teams in Simi Valley, San Diego, Orange County and Northern California along with two Arizona teams in Phoenix and Prescott Valley. National Hockey League (NHL) Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille is helping lead the expansion into Ventura County.

The Santa Paula City Council has decided to part ways with City Manager Dan Singer, although he has agreed to stay on with the city until his existing contract sunsets on June 30, 2027. Singer served as city manager for more than seven years and city officials called his service honorable and commendable in a news release announcing the upcoming change in leadership.

Sky Lantern Arrest: Santa Paula man faces felony arson charge for launching lanterns, igniting brush fire
Sky lanterns soar through the air lifted by a candle creating hot air. While the devices resembling flying, illuminated paper bags, also known as Chinese lanterns, date back centuries as celebratory symbols and military beacons, they are illegal in the state of California. Santa Paula Police Chief Don Aguilar told the Ventura County Reporter a local resident learned about that law the hard way after launching multiple sky lanterns on July 4 and igniting a brush fire.
