Canadian Outdoors Retailer Going Private
Roots Corp. (Toronto) is being bought by Marquee Brands (New York), a brand management/accelerator. The deal, which is slated to close by year-end assuming it gets regulatory and shareholder approval, will “preserve all that makes Roots uniquely Canadian, while bringing the brand to more consumers around the world,” the companies said in a news release. As part of the transaction, Marquee Brands has partnered with Toronto-based JM&A Design and Development Inc.
Dual-Brand Chain Experiences Explosive Growth in China
Yum China Holdings Inc. (Shanghai) has opened its 300th Pizza Hut V Burger Bar in China. Since launching the side-by-side concept in late 2025, Pizza Hut China has rolled out more than one location per day on average, and plans to as much as double its number of units by year-end. “We entered the burger category two years ago with Pizza Dough Burgers, which have been well received by consumers,” Jeff Kuai, General Manager of Pizza Hut China, said in a news release.

(San Diego) has hired Taylor Montgomery as President, with a planned ascension to CEO. Montgomery, formerly Global Chief Brand Officer at Yum! Brands’ Taco Bell unit, will assume his new role on Sept. 14, and take the top post at the 2200-unit chain within 12 months of that.
Grocery Planned for Downtown Columbus
Downtown Columbus is slated to get its first full-service grocery in decades, The Columbus Dispatch reports. Discount chain ALDI US (Batavia, Ill.) is set to build a new 20,000-square-foot store adjacent to Columbus State Community College’s campus through a partnership with Columbus State Community Partners, the college’s real estate affiliate.
Discount Retailer Ramps Up Store Openings
The TJX Cos. Inc. (Framingham, Mass.) said it is accelerating its store openings and long-term store-fleet size. The off-price apparel and home fashions retailer detailed those plans in its news release for its second quarter results for FY 2027, during which it saw above-plan comparable sales increase of 4% and a net income of $1.5 billion.
M&S Expanding its Food Business with New Standalone Food Hall
At 22000 square feet, M&S (London) opened its largest standalone food hall at the Wharf Retail Park in Godalming, Surrey. The food store includes an in-store bakery, produce and wine areas, cheese barge, Mai Sushi, a rotisserie chicken counter and kitchenware department. The store features M&S’s new design concept with “improved navigation, updated décor, new signage, wider fresh areas and upgraded tills,” according to a press release.
