WETS-FM (89.5 FM) is the National Public Radio member station for the Tri-Cities region of northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia. The station is operated by East Tennessee State University as a partnership between ETSU and the station’s listeners. WETS receives a little over half of its funding from listener contributions. It also receives public funding from federal (Corporation for Public Broadcasting) and government-funded university sources. Its studios are located on the ETSU campus in Johnson City, Tennessee. Operating 24-hours a day, the station also has a SHOUTcast webcast available on its web site. The station also operates an FM translator at 91.5 MHz in Lenoir, North Carolina. Source

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has announced a massive package of arms sales to Taiwan valued at more than $10 billion that includes medium-range missiles, howitzers and drones, a move that is sure to infuriate China. The State Department announced the sales late Wednesday during a nationally televised address by President Donald Trump, who made scant mention of foreign policy issues and did not speak about China or Taiwan at all.
Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent Peter Arnett has died
LOS ANGELES — Peter Arnett, the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter who spent decades dodging bullets and bombs to bring the world eyewitness accounts of war from the rice paddies of Vietnam to the deserts of Iraq, has died. He was 91. Arnett, who won the 1966 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting for his Vietnam War coverage for The Associated Press, died Wednesday in Newport Beach and was surrounded by friends and family, said his son Andrew Arnett. He had been suffering from prostate cancer.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino says he will step down in January
FBI deputy director Dan Bongino said Wednesday he plans to step down from the bureau in January. In a statement posted on X, Bongino thanked President Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel "for the opportunity to serve with purpose." Bongino was an unusual pick for the No. 2 post at the FBI, a critical job overseeing the bureau's day-to-day affairs traditionally held by a career agent. Neither Bongino nor his boss, Patel, had any previous experience at the FBI.
Federal court says troops can stay in D.C., and hints at prolonged deployment
National Guard troops can remain in Washington, D.C. while a panel of judges examines whether the deployment ordered by President Trump is legal, according to a Federal Appeals Court for Washington, D.C. ruling. More than 2,000 troops have been deployed in the city since August, both from the District and at least 11 Republican-led states. Hundreds more were added after a targeted attack on National Guard troops killed one and wounded another last month, both of whom were from West Virginia.
Jack Smith defends his prosecutions of Trump in closed-door session in Congress
Former Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith defended his investigations of President Trump, telling congressional lawmakers Wednesday that he made prosecutorial decisions without regard to Trump's "political association, activities, beliefs, or candidacy in the 2024 presidential election," according to portions of his opening statement obtained by NPR.
A Chinese man who filmed secret footage in Xinjiang risks deportation from the U.S.
Guan Heng, a native of landlocked north-central China, was so desperate to reach the United States in October 2021 that he decided to buy a small inflatable boat, and set sail from the Bahamas. He had just published roughly 20-minute video drawn from footage he had filmed in China's Xinjiang region where people were reportedly being detained. Guan believed the film would lead to his arrest in China, so he hoped to reach the U.S. and ask for asylum.
'Harry Potter' fans are flying to Broadway to see the original Draco Malfoy
Almost eight years after Harry Potter and the Cursed Child opened, it has become the highest grossing show on Broadway. Why? Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter's nemesis at Hogwarts in the eight films, is now playing him onstage. After every performance, crowds gather at the stage door to get autographs, selfies or just a close-up glimpse of Felton. Anna Chan flew to New York from San Francisco to see him in the show.
