The Atlantic basin has once again become a tropical graveyard, with dry air and atmospheric stability stifling any type of tropical development. The quiet pattern comes after multiple tropical waves and Tropical Storm Cristobal were tracked across the Atlantic, but none were ever a threat to land. Despite the calendar showing that the statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is just weeks away, the overall atmosphere remains hostile for any type of tropical development.
Ukraine launches one of its largest aerial attacks of the war, killing at least 6 people in Russia
Ukraine launched hundreds of drones across Russia Sunday, killing at least six people in one of Kyiv's largest aerial attacks of the war. Russia's Ministry of Defense said that it had destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones overnight. Some 600 drones were detected headed toward the Russian capital, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said, with a third destroyed over the Moscow region itself. An 83-year-old man was killed after a Ukrainian drone hit a private home in the Moscow region, local Gov.
Rescuers dig through rubble and landslides after Indonesia quake kills 51
Updated August 16, 2026 at 5:54 AM EDT RUTENG, Indonesia — Rescue teams in eastern Indonesia recovered four more bodies Sunday after a magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck the day before, bringing the death toll to 51, authorities said. Thousands have been displaced. The U.S. Geological Survey said the powerful earthquake hit eastern Indonesia's Flores region at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) at 5:58 a.m. local time. Residents fled in panic as tsunami warnings were issued and later lifted.
