Volusia council restores arts funding this year, cancels grants moving forward

The Volusia County Council voted Tuesday to restore cultural and arts funding for the year, but to cancel cultural grants in the county moving forward. That means more than $570,000 dollars in funding has been restored. It was pulled in October over concerns about venues with what one councilman called, “non-family friendly events” that were LGBTQ themed, like Pride and drag shows.

Florida Board of Governors approves hiring freeze for H-1B workers at public universities

The Florida Board of Governors voted Monday to put a 10-month hiring freeze in place for candidates on H-1B visas at all of its public universities. The moratorium does not impact workers who are currently employed or up for renewal on those visas. H-1B visas are used by employers to temporarily hire foreign workers in specialized or technical professions that usually require a bachelor’s degree or more training.

Mount Dora food pantry puts out a plea for help, other Central Florida food banks feel the need

A food pantry in Mount Dora is putting out an urgent call for food donations. Lake Cares Food Pantry has experienced a decline in food donations, while hunger continues to rise in the area. The pantry, which in 2024 served about 1,600 families a month, has seen that number increase by 500, putting a strain on resources and leaving pantry shelves almost bare. Lake Cares Executive Director Kelsey Gonzalez said it’s pretty typical that food donations drop after the holidays.
