What does it mean to be a journalist?
Listen, learn, teach.
Who do you wish followed you?
Dreaming big here, because why not: Oprah.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I wrote a personal essay on suicide ideation that hit a nerve with more people than, given the topic, I would have liked.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be nice to everyone, because you never know what could lead where, but more importantly be nice to yourself.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime is fine! (Just keep it to the daytime hours, will ya?)
What's the best pitch you ever got?
The ones that are personable and concise, like someone emailing a friend, are my favorite. Those PR reps usually do turn into friends.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I won't name names, but I routinely receive pitches from someone that are 2,000+ words. That's longer than most articles I write.
What's your favorite drink?
A caipirinha if I happen to be by a beach. If not, light reds, big whites, and anything with bubbles.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
When am I not at a computer? Jk, kinda. I do a lot of yoga, travel often, and am a sucker for Real Housewives.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
My desert island publication is the NYT. It has everything.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Vague design pitches die in my inbox. It's better to introduce yourself and your clients, then let me come to you with image/quote needs.
