Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Not in an officially capacity. My grandparents had a green typewriter in their basement that I would clack away on as a child.

How is social media changing news?

It's certainly made it more accessible—though I don't think social media has done journalism any favors on the accuracy front.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A willingness to say yes to any scenario and an unquenchable curiosity.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Google Docs, the AP Stylebook, and a lot of staring out the window

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

We didn't have a newspaper, but I was the assistant editor of our yearbook.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My first piece for Lynchburg Living was about a group of outliers—artists, underdogs, creators—who needed a safe space to share their work.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

You actually *can* make a living as a writer—advice I wish I had gotten when I was 19.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime is the best time to pitch me. I'm about to be a new mom, so I anticipate many sleepless nights and lots of time on email.

What's your favorite drink?

Gin and tonic with Deacon
