'They're scared': LGBTQ rights divides Israel's Arab lawmakers
In Israel’s last election, the vast majority of Arab citizens voted for the Arab-led Joint List – an eclectic mix of four parties that includes secularists, communists, Palestinian nationalists and Islamic lawmakers. Despite the diversity of opinions within the slate, which won 15 seats in March, Joint List members tend to vote as a bloc on most issues and speak as one voice, more or less. Indeed, it is extremely rare for members of the Joint List to split their vote.
Transphobia raising its head on the Israeli right | Opinion
Many transphobic remarks have been made recently by figures associated with the fundamentalist right. Bezalel Smotrich, Yinon Magal, Shimon Riklin and Erel Segal have expressed and shared transphobic content; so have Moriah Kor, in Israel Hayom, and Rabbi Dror Aryeh, on the Hebrew website 24/6. The remarks were accompanied by choruses of hate on social media.
Israel's 'coronavirus cabinet' faces a tough dilemma – and public disobedience
It’s hard to shake the impression that Israel has lost its direction in the battle against the coronavirus. The past three weeks have seen a significant, almost continual, rise in the daily number of newly infected people. The true severity of the phenomenon is not yet known. Crimes committed by foreign citizens in Israel declined in 2019 by nearly 10 percent, and are on a downward trend for the first time in five years. The figures were publicized in the context of the Israel Police annual report, which indicates that last year there was a significant drop in crimes by foreigners. The report defined foreigners as suspects who are not Jews or Palestinians, such as "tourists, migrant workers and infiltrators," the last category referring to asylum seekers.
Court orders probe into violent arrest of asylum seekers by Tel Aviv police
The Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday ordered the Justice Ministry’s police misconduct unit to open an investigation into the violent arrest of two Eritrean asylum seekers in south Tel Aviv the evening before, which was caught on video. The police claim that the suspects had attacked police officers at the scene first and that the initial part of the confrontation was not caught on film.
Israeli economy contracts at a 7.1% annual rate in first quarter amid coronavirus crisis
The Israeli economy contracted at a 7.1% annual rate in the first quarter of 2020 amid the coronavirus crisis, its biggest decline in 20 years, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported on Monday. The decline came as the Bank of Israel said it was holding its key lending rate unchanged at 0.1% for June, apparently with the aim of leaving it the option of cutting it to zero if conditions worsen.
