Genome-wide association studies of infant and toddler temperament in European and multi-ancestry populations
Abstract Early temperament, such as socio-emotional development and activity level, varies widely, yet its underlying biological associations are not understood. We identified genetic variation associated with infant and toddler temperament using genome-wide association meta-analyses. We studied parent-rated emotionality, activity, shyness and sociability (n = 43,963–72,663) in the second and third postnatal years and a cross-age average.
Genetic and environmental influences on educational disparities in adult weight change: an individual-based pooled analysis of 11 twin cohorts
|
Abstract Educational attainment (EA) is negatively associated with body mass index (BMI), but less is known about the association between EA and adult BMI change. We analysed the role of genetic and environmental factors in the associations between EA and BMI trajectory components over adulthood. Pooled data from 59,490 twins aged 31–99 years (49% women) across 11 cohorts with EA and repeated measures of BMI were used.

Adolescent wellbeing is associated with positive outcomes in early adulthood in a sibling comparison study
Abstract Puberty through adulthood involves major psychological and social change. Prospective evidence on adolescent wellbeing and later outcomes remains limited. Here we show that higher adolescent wellbeing (age 14–16) is associated with more favourable psychological and health-related outcomes in early adulthood (ages 20–25 and 25–35).
Genetic and environmental effects on weight gain from young adulthood to old age and its association with body mass index in early young adulthood: an individual-based pooled analysis of 16 twin cohorts | International Journal of Obesity
|
Abstract Genetic and environmental factors contribute to weight gain, but how these effects change over adulthood is largely unknown. We examined how genetic factors influence BMI changes from young adulthood to old age and how this change relates to BMI in early adulthood. Data from 16 longitudinal twin cohorts, including 111,370 adults (56% women) and 55,657 complete twin pairs (42% monozygotic), were pooled.

Genetics of monozygotic twins reveals the impact of environmental sensitivity on psychiatric and neurodevelopmental phenotypes - Nature Human Behaviour
|
Abstract Individual sensitivity to environmental exposures may be genetically influenced. This genotype-by-environment interplay implies differences in phenotypic variance across genotypes, but these variants have proven challenging to detect. Genome-wide association studies of monozygotic twin differences are conducted through family-based variance analyses, which are more robust to the systemic biases that impact population-based methods.

Genome-wide association meta-analysis of age at onset of walking in over 70,000 infants of European ancestry - Nature Human Behaviour
|
Abstract Age at onset of walking is an important early childhood milestone which is used clinically and in public health screening. In this genome-wide association study meta-analysis of age at onset of walking (N = 70,560 European-ancestry infants), we identified 11 independent genome-wide significant loci. SNP-based heritability was 24.13% (95% confidence intervals = 21.86–26.40) with ~11,900 variants accounting for about 90% of it, suggesting high polygenicity.

Intergenerational transmission of complex traits and the offspring methylome - Molecular Psychiatry
Abstract The genetic makeup of parents can directly or indirectly affect their offspring phenome through genetic transmission or via the environment that is influenced by parental heritable traits. Our understanding of the mechanisms by which indirect genetic effects operate is limited. Here, we hypothesize that one mechanism is via the offspring methylome.

Do environmental effects indexed by parental genetic variation influence common psychiatric symptoms in childhood? - Translational Psychiatry
Abstract Parental genes may indirectly influence offspring psychiatric outcomes through the environment that parents create for their children. These indirect genetic effects, also known as genetic nurture, could explain individual differences in common internalising and externalising psychiatric symptoms during childhood. Advanced statistical genetic methods leverage data from families to estimate the overall contribution of parental genetic nurture effects.
Objective and subjective psychosocial outcomes in adults with autism spectrum disorder: A 6-year longitudinal study
Many autistic adults1 find it difficult to attain socially ‘normative’ life goals such as holding a job, living independently or finding a romantic partner (Billstedt et al., 2011; Bishop-Fitzpatrick et al., 2016; Howlin & Moss, 2012; Roux et al., 2013).
Ultra-rare, rare, and common genetic variant analysis converge to implicate negative selection and neuronal processes in the aetiology of schizophrenia
ABSTRACT Both common and rare genetic variants (minor allele frequency > 1% and < 0.1% respectively) have been implicated in the aetiology of schizophrenia. In this study, we integrate single-cell gene expression data with publicly available Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) and exome sequenced data in order to investigate in parallel, the enrichment of common and (ultra-)rare variants related to schizophrenia in several functionally relevant gene sets.

Twin-sibling study and meta-analysis on the heritability of maximal oxygen consumption
maximal oxygen uptake (V̇o2max) is defined as the highest rate of oxygen consumption during maximal intensity exercise performed until exhaustion (23) and is considered a good index of aerobic fitness and endurance capacity. Direct measurement of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production during the climax of a graded maximal exercise test is the gold standard V̇o2max measurement.
Out of Control
Family violence is common and brings tremendous costs to individuals, relationships, and society. Victims are vulnerable to negative outcomes across a host of dimensions, including cognitive performance, impulse control, emotion regulation, and physical health. Links between family violence and various problems have been established, yet the specific processes underlying these associations are poorly understood, resulting in the stunted development of effective interventions.
