Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I have always been a freelancer. My first nationally publishe story was for 3-2-1 Contact Magazine.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

That's like asking my age, is it not?

How is social media changing news?

I think we have a constant state of information overload, making it harder to write something that people don't already know about.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Bailey Quarters from WKRP

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means I get to be the scout, heading out to the edge of any frontier, then reporting back to my tribe the details they need for survival.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Emails are perfect.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I couldn't function without my iPhone and One Note.

What's your favorite social network?

For the ease of connecting with people who might not normally give you the time of day I like Twitter.

Who do you wish followed you?

Charlie Rose

Why did you become a journalist?

It allows me to be a painter of words in short bursts.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I worked on my Jr. High newspaper as a reporter. By high school, I was planning to be an architect. So much for that idea.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'd have to say that first story for 3-2-1 Contact. I am still selling reprint rights to it for English language workbooks around the world.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Learn to build your own brand while building the brand of the publications you work for.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Thursday or Friday

What's the best pitch you ever got?

"I need you to experience this in person..."

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

"i wood luv to write for the blog u have. its awesome sauce!!!!"

What's your favorite drink?

Coca Cola

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

On the road.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Love AFAR and the new BravoTV Jet Set looks promising. Pretty much anything with travel holds my attention.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That the work is easy just because it includes travel to fun places.
