Melissa Cullen’s Biography

Melissa Cullen, based in Cranston, Rhode Island, reflects a multicultural heritage with Sicilian and Italian roots on her father’s side and Portuguese and Cape Verdean ancestry on her mother’s side. Growing up as the middle child of eight siblings, she experienced the joys and challenges of a large, close-knit family. She spent her early years in Brighton, Massachusetts, before her family moved to Newton, MA, where they settled into their dream home. The neighborhood they moved to was vibrant, filled with large families, and offered a strong sense of community.

Melissa’s siblings, especially Demetrius and Richard, were key influences in her life. Demetrius, the eldest, became a basketball star in the early 1980s, motivating her to participate in track and gymnastics. She later served as co-captain of her cheerleading team for 2 years. The youngest, Richard, pursued a professional athletic career and became a well-known face in the media, appearing on several magazine covers. Despite the strong support from her family, she faced challenges, particularly as the only Black family in her neighborhood.

Racial tensions emerged, especially during an unexpected racial conflict at Newton South, which created an uncomfortable atmosphere. Melissa’s career journey began with her passion for working with children. She spent many summers at camp with her siblings, which led her to pursue a career as a Camp Director. She started as a Counselor in Training (CIT) and worked her way up to Assistant Program Director.

Alongside this role, she studied interior design at Newbury College and Suffolk University in Boston, expanding her professional skill set.
Her career later branched out into several fields. Melissa was a wedding planner and designer, creating unforgettable moments for couples. She also opened a Floral Expressions flower shop and ran two daycare centers. Additionally, she worked in home interior design and real estate, managing properties and assisting clients with home improvements. These experiences helped her develop a versatile skill set that would later inform her nonprofit work.

In recent years, Melissa founded Shorelines of Hope, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people experiencing homelessness. The facility will provide crucial services, including a soup kitchen, showers, and daily meals. Volunteers will manage the operation, ensuring those in need receive food, dignity, and respect. She is working to open this facility in Rhode Island, where she resides, to offer support to those who are homeless.

Looking ahead, Melissa is planning to launch Shore Adventure Centers in 2027. These all-season camps will offer an inclusive environment for children and adults with special needs, people with paraplegia, and transgender individuals. The camps will feature ADA-compliant facilities, trained staff, and amenities like an indoor and outdoor pool with a lift. These camps will be free of charge for children from inner-city communities, giving them a chance to experience something truly special. She is searching for land in Foster, Rhode Island, a beautiful area with rolling hills and natural beauty that will serve as the ideal setting for the camp.

Through her nonprofit work and future projects, Melissa Cullen remains committed to making a positive impact on others' lives. Her dedication to service and her ability to turn ideas into action continue to guide her as she works to create lasting change.
