On any given day, New York’s emergency food sector helps tens of thousands of families put food on the table. Behind each meal lies an increasingly fragile system, stretched to the brink by funding shortfalls and bureaucratic delays. Today, more than 2 million New Yorkers — including one in five children in New York City — live in homes where it’s not clear when the next meal will be. Demand for food assistance remains 32% higher than before the pandemic.
