Rice Market: All Eyes on Tropical Storm Barry
It has been an interesting several weeks in the rice industry since the last report as several new pieces of information have materialized that have contributed to the market’s perception of the 2019 rice crop. The weekly export sales report showed sales at a reasonable 65,900 MT for the week which was up notably from the previous week’s numbers. This is a modest boost over the very low values seen earlier and with current export cycles still in effect, the report next week should note some gains.

All rice production increased by 10.6 million cwt to 208.7 million with long-grain production raised 12.6 million cwt on a higher harvested area than previously estimated.
Rice: Tropical Storm Barry – Wrong Time, Wrong Place – AgFax
Here is this week’s issue of AgFax Rice, sponsored by the Southern rice team of Corteva Agriscience. OVERVIEW Tropical Storm Barry has been termed “a major rainmaker” and it will affect at least some rice acres along the Gulf Coast. Depending on its track through the weekend, the storm also might dump rain in the Midsouth. In our Also of Note section, connect to a related article from the University of Arkansas on projected rainfall amounts.
Cotton - Midsouth - Coping In An Out-Of-Sync Season - AgFax
OVERVIEW More optimism. Much of the Midsouth cotton crop has hit bloom and the mood among people in the field has noticeably perked up in the past several weeks. Still, the season is largely out of sync. Normally by now, bollworms are turning up in cotton in the southern portion of our coverage area, but the expected flight hasn’t kicked into gear on any wide basis. Along with that, uneven stands are complicating plant growth regulator timing. Aphids and plant bugs remain a problem in places.
Minnesota Wheat: Burning Flag Leaves and Leaf Tip Necrosis
Maturing wheat. Photo: Blair Fannin, Texas AgriLife Extension In the past week, I have had several calls about wheat fields that showed severe ‘disease’ on the flag leaf. The symptoms were always described as a dying back of the flag leaf from the tip of the leaf downwards (Photo 1 and 2). This is not a disease but these symptoms are either caused by hot, dry and windy weather (Photo 1), a physiological phenomenon called leaf tip necrosis (Photo 2), or the combination of both.
West Texas IPM: Sugarcane Aphids Arrive; Large Fall Armyworm Flight

Greg Cronholm, Independent Crop Consultant in Hale County, texted last night and reported finding a few small colonies. I found some today on blooming sorghum on the Experiment Station in Lubbock. Scouting and management guidelines are here.

Georgia Pecans: Widespread Die-Back Attributed to Delayed Hurricane Damage
Young pecan trees suffering die-back from delayed hurricane damage. Photo: University of Georgia Over the last week I have had at least 5 separate calls from different parts of the state regarding trees–usually in the range of 2 years old up to 12-15 years old– exhibiting die back of branches/central leader and leaf burning or scorching. In many cases it is more severe than the normal leaf scorching we see on young trees and some of the trees have actually died.
