BTJ 5/24 - SUSTAINABILITY: CHEK it out! The secret ingredient in low-carbon ship design
by Mia Elg, R&D Manager, Deltamarin My previous article was about understanding the big picture and the future of heat processes in shipping. This time, we move from pure heat systems to ship machinery and energy system analysis, with some examples from our newly concluded EU-funded project CHEK (which will always have a special place in my heart, largely because of the people in our great 'CHEK family' and that it was also the first EU-project for me personally).

1. Introduction GHG emissions from the shipping industry currently account for nearly 3% of global GHG emissions [1]. Without prompt action, these emissions are projected to increase by up to 130% of the 2008 levels by 2050 [2]. At MEPC80 in July 2023, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) revised the decarbonisation strategy for the shipping industry, with the aim of achieving “net-zero GHG emissions by or around 2050” [3].

BTJ 5/22 - MARITIME: Know thy ship. Why 'real' carbon footprint is key to investment
by Mia Elg, R&D Manager, Deltamarin Shipowners and operators should be well into planning for the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) regulations coming in from 2023 and what improvements they should make so their vessels comply. The best future-proof path is to base investment decisions on an analysis of a ship's actual carbon footprint.
Career Paths: Mia Elg, Deltamarin
In our special column this month, we are glad to host an interview with Mia Elg, R&D Manager, Deltamarin, who wishes the industry to make the transition to sustainable shipping more efficient. In that regard, the interesting challenge would really be to influence in the behavior of entire systems, Mrs Elg notes, highlighting that there are many ways to optimize both environmental and economical performance in shipping.
