Growth and maturity in “Spirited Away”
Movie poster for Spirited Away. Photo from Google In the spirit of Halloween, what could be better than a movie about spirits and magic? While this article may be released a few days after Halloween, it is hoped that the reader will give the writer the benefit of the doubt and read this article in the proper spirit. Now, on to the movie! What word could better describe the film “Spirited Away” by famed director Hayao Miyazaki than “masterpiece”?
A dystopia of human excellence in “Gattaca”
Before getting into the thick of things, we must ask the reader to forgive us for sounding a bit pretentious as we lay some principles of proper science fiction. Science fiction is meant to look at a trend present in modern society, amplify it and present its conclusions in a different society. Much like how getting too close to a painting can obscure the image as a whole, distance provides clarity.
The weight of leadership in Kenneth Branagh’s “Henry V”
What does it mean to be a leader? Such a question often brings divisive responses. Despite the abundance of differences in defining a leader, there is a standard of core values that we can reflect on. Decisiveness, bravery, prudence, and virtue are all universally recognized marks of a true leader. A true leader must turn away from their own desires for the common good, even if it means personal sacrifice and suffering.
Dedication to Truth in “A Hidden Life”
The history of the Church has been formed and defined by the sacrifice by her many martyrs. Martyrdom is considered one of the greatest honors that can be bestowed upon a faithful Catholic. Martyrs have been and are being created in every age. The suffering undergone by the faithful gives rise to questions of uncertainty: to what extent should Christians defend the faith in the public arena?
Belonging in “The Breakfast Club”
The Breakfast Club Movie. Photo from Google. Most of us are familiar with a very stereotypical experience: the high school retreat. You are taken out to a random cabin in the middle of the woods, the food isn’t great, the people even less so, and teachers expect you to bare your innermost secrets to a group of strangers that you have had no say in being part of. After five days of “bonding” you make endless promises to be friends at school.
The struggle for truth in “Risen”
“Quid est veritas?” The question posed by Pilate during the trial of Jesus Christ is one that has lasted until today, and it is an accurate depiction of modern man’s tendency to wrestle with the truth. In “Risen,” Pilate serves as a symbol of our age, for he has a cold cynicism that is not able to see truth, even when it is standing in front of him. In “Risen,” one man’s struggle with deciphering the truth causes conflict, when what he believes to be true is challenged by the person of Christ.
