Origami: The Shape of Hope
My home isn’t like the others in Lucid City. It is flimsy, fragile enough to be blown away by the wind at any moment. I do not shop for food or return to a warm apartment at the end of the day. Instead, I beg from strangers whose judgmental eyes burn through my ragged clothes. No matter how people treat me, I must bend and fold to whatever life decides to give me.
The Boy Beneath the Cape: Healing the Child Left Behind
Like every other morning, I board the subway train alongside the exhausted citizens of Lucid City. The iron horse barrels through endless underground tunnels while hundreds of strangers sit shoulder to shoulder without ever acknowledging one another. Faces remain buried behind glowing phone screens, newspapers, books, and headphones. Everyone escapes somewhere else before clocking into another day of routine. I can’t even judge them for it.
The Last Sharpest Sword: The Burden of the Perfect Warrior
I sit atop a hill overlooking my village with my sword resting across my lap. I crack my neck from side to side and take several deep breaths before beginning my final round of meditation. With my eyes closed, I follow the sacred breathing rhythm passed down through our clan for generations. Every samurai is taught this discipline from childhood. It is more than meditation—it sharpens the body and mind beyond ordinary limits.
The Beach Between Worlds: Where Memory and Death Meet the Tide
The ocean takes a little more of the beach with every small wave that laps onto the shore. More sand and shells return to the bottom of the sea, yet the same waves that take from the beach also replenish it. It is a loop that will continue forever. Besides that, it is the perfect weather for a beach day. There is not a cloud in the sky. I keep my feet submerged beneath the cool, salty water while people enjoy themselves behind me.
The Courts by the Tracks: A Story Beyond Basketball
Sitting on my basketball at the courts by the train tracks, I watch the express metro train rush by at full speed. There was a time when I didn’t know where that train went—a time before my best friends and I took it one day to explore outside our neighborhood. Still, no matter where that train could take me, there’s nowhere I would trade for the courts tucked beside these tracks. I shoot around to warm up before my bros arrive for our usual three-on-three or every-man-for-himself games.
After Us: Beyond The Umbilical
How we came to be can be found in the distant past. I am a firm believer in that. The past must hold the answers—what or who created us? What is the purpose of life? Why don’t we remember where we are from? These questions flood my mind through many sun and lunar cycles on Gaia. I often wonder if we are the only intelligent and consciously aware sentient beings in the universe. I take a handful of seeds, plant them into the ground, and emit vibrational frequencies to activate them.
The Rose Knight and the Witch
As twilight rays wrap around the kingdom, I stand on my bedroom balcony, watching every citizen carry out their duties for the Rose. Father has unfair restrictions on me going anywhere outside the castle grounds for too long by myself, but my twin brother gets to roam freely as the lead knight of the Rose Armada. I am doomed to remain within sight of the royal castle grounds. From the rise of many suns to the passing of countless moons, I have wished things could be different—but they cannot.
Once in a Blue Moon
There is a giant full moon out tonight—the largest it will be all year. How do I know this? I’ve visited our moon and its colonies countless times. The lunar surface has become home to the first wave of settlers, filled with highly sophisticated research facilities dedicated to exploring the final frontier. But do they have good whiskey up there? Probably not. The moon is a very quiet place—too quiet for my taste.
The Mysteries and Inspiration from the Heavens: Prose from Above
A sky littered with gems for the pleasurement of the human soul from a small hill under a tree. I, the wandering dreamer, cannot rest. The wandering dreamer cannot rest until the thirst for inspiration is quenched. The evening summer breeze makes the green organic blades sway with each breath I take. Tonight, I find my thoughts encapsulated in a muse miles above.
What Are the Main Comic Book Genres Today?
The Evolution of Comic Book Genres Comic books have come a long way since their inception in the early 20th century. Initially dominated by superhero tales, the genre landscape has diversified to encompass a wide range of storytelling forms. This evolution reflects broader societal changes, technological advancements, and the increasing recognition of comic book as a legitimate art form.
The Healing Joy of a Hike in the Woods
featured photo by Val Vesa The trees don’t need to speak, and the leaves don’t have to be carried by the wind in any particular direction. What matters most is the present moment, centered in the heart of nature’s wonders. The forest communicates not with words but through a universal language that transcends human expression. Hiking, one of my most cherished activities, offers a journey into purpose and presence. The trail invites us to lose ourselves, not in confusion, but in connection.
The Art of Handling Rejection and Saying No
No is a two-letter word that can leave impact craters that riddle us with self-doubt. Saying no is an immediate and sharp response that puts a screeching halt to what drives us toward a self-justified concept of passion. It is not the two letters that trigger us, but the implication of denial and rejection of our identity or what we want. Our prideful nature wants what the eyes see, and what the eyes see lets the heart know that this thing is right for us, meaning we must obtain it.
Column: Build on HECO’s proactive PSPS plan
Hawaiian Electric’s recent introduction of the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program represents a proactive approach to mitigating wildfire risks, which is a growing concern as climate change continues to impact local weather patterns. This type of program, though still relatively new both in Hawaii and nationally, has triggered important conversations about how we can better prepare for and adapt to these emerging challenges.
3 Reasons To Start Our Day Early In The Morning
There is something about the stillness of the morning that allows us to better prepare to start our day. Although the sun may not be up yet, our focus becomes brightened with the light from a quiet mind, illuminating a plan for a day’s productive tasks. As someone who grew up in New York City, I am all too familiar with a lot happening simultaneously while having to rush and multitask.
Column: Nurture local clean energy solutions
Not many things can claim to have the support of more than 90% of Hawaii voters these days, but renewable energy appears to be among them. Ulupono Initiative recently completed a comprehensive statewide energy perception survey — arguably the most comprehensive of its kind in Hawaii — and the results are striking. The survey showed overwhelming support for renewable energy expansion, with 91% of respondents across all counties in favor, illustrating a community that’s solidly onboard.
'Now And Forever' By Michael Colon
Now And Forever by Michael Colon, is a poem that captures a poignant moment the day before a wedding and an homage to a father’s spirit. As per our FAQ, the copyright of this poem belongs to Michael Colon. If you wish to submit your poems, short stories, and essays, you may do so here: The day before, I say I do, and souls unite. I sat alone in the comfort of the summer night. A warm breeze blew. And sitting next to me was someone who resembles you. The man who was supposed to walk you down the aisle.
The Onion Effect: Peel the Layers Away
Let’s talk about “The Onion”; no I don’t mean the satire news site (though I do really love it). I’m talking about the layers of emotions we all tend to experience from time to time. The moments where it feels like we can crawl out of our skin, the itchy, sinking feeling of being overwhelmed. Angry, confused, scared and quite honestly, crazy.
