Smiles all around at 2026 CIAW
I want to start this week by extending a massive, massive congratulations to Amy Schoch on the success of this year’s Catskill Irish Arts Week! In a stunning return to pre-pandemic form, the week she put together in her first year as CIAW director yielded an energy and spirit I’ve not seen for a good while now.
Ward, Coyle added to 3Arena card
Las Vegas-based Zuffa Boxing’s big Aug. 8 card at Dublin’s 3Arena continues to take shape with the addition of two popular Irish fighters with U.S. connections -- light heavyweight title contender “Mighty” Joe Ward and undefeated middleweight Connor Coyle. A 2016 Olympian from Athlone, six of whose 13 professional fights have been at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Ward ends a two-year layoff with a 10-rounder against the unbeaten Artjom Kasparian.
Pride Leading to Many Falls
In 1979 Pope John Paul II visited Ireland, the first Pope to do so. British authorities were annoyed and fearful for his safety in Northern Ireland so he spoke instead at Drogheda near the partition border. He pleaded for a peace based on justice, the basic principles of brotherhood, the respect due to each person and against the evil of violence.
GERRY ADAMS: No surprises from Micheál Martin on unity vote
THE decision by Micheál Martin last week to oppose Sinn Féin’s ‘Planning for Constitutional Change Bill 2026’ was no real surprise. His opposition to any meaningful planning for Irish unity has been transparently obvious for many years. Despite Fine Gael spokespersons declaring that Fine Gael would not oppose the Sinn Féin Bill they then chose to support An Taoiseach. No surprise there. Simon Harris is Tánaiste to Micheál Martin’s Taoiseach.
CBOI at Carnegie Hall
The Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland, which has been promoting peace since 1995, will again grace the Carnegie Hall stage Friday evening, March 17. The celebration St. Patrick’s Day concert marks the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. Based in Dundalk, Co. Louth, the CBOI is composed of over 130 young musicians, from age 14 to 24, from all over Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Confronting Ireland's Growing Far Right Ideology
This past fall, the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE) released a report on Ireland’s growing far-right scene, pointing to the demonization of immigrants and refugees as one of the main issues fueling the fire. Within months of our reporting, protests against immigrants and refugees spread across the country, led by many of the groups we profiled.
A Holiday That All the World Can Share
Growing up in Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day was always welcome. It was first and foremost welcome because it was a day off from school. March 17 was an official holiday. To this day there are only three locations on the planet where St. Patrick’s Day is an official holiday: Ireland, the entire island, and the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean. In the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador it is a holiday on the nearest Monday to March 17.
Preserving Union by Perfecting Partition
The roll-out of Britain’s leaving the European Union officially began with parliament's adoption of the 2020 Trading and Cooperation Act, but other pacts dealing with financial and legal sectors may take years to resolve. The verdict of political pundits to-date is hardly mixed with Guardian columnist William Kerrigan calling Brexit “the gold standard of self-harm.” Most others are less charitable.

Toast to inedible fruitcake, and bless those who ingest it
I easily remember our wedding anniversary in 1973 for two reasons: First, it was the year that Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of his Triple Crown. Second, that Christmas in 1973 my Irish wife introduced me to the English-Irish culinary tradition of a Christmas fruitcake. While I can occasionally forget a wedding anniversary after 45 years, I will never forget that fruitcake. There are dear friends who have vanished after my wife gifted them one of these leaden cakes.
