UCF Student COVID-19 Vaccinations Start This Week at Pegasus Ballroom
Starting today, the Pfizer vaccine is available to Florida residents age 16 and older, and the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are available to those 18 and older. UCF has received enough vaccine from the Florida Department of Health in Orange County to provide both doses of the Pfizer vaccine to about 6,000 students residing in the Orlando area at a clinic in the Pegasus Ballroom that will open this week. More information will be shared later today directly with these students.
COVID-19 Precautions and Vaccine Update
We are all concerned about the status of COVID-19 in Central Florida, especially as we prepare to start spring classes on Monday. As physicians and faculty, we want to share information about the virus and UCF’s plan. We have been living with COVID since March, and the university’s robust contact tracing program has shown no spread of the virus as a result of classroom teaching.
Preparing for a COVID-19 Vaccine
It is encouraging that multiple COVID-19 vaccine candidates are demonstrating high effectivity and may soon become publicly available. However, that must not stop our efforts to remain focused on protecting ourselves and others from COVID-19 during the holiday season. UCF may serve as a mass vaccination site in the spring. We will encourage students, faculty and staff to get vaccinated in the interest of our community’s health and safety.
Guidelines for Receiving COVID-19 Tests, Reporting Results
Cases of COVID-19 are on the rise across Florida, and we cannot ignore the reality that the virus exists in our communities. As outlined in our Return to Campus Plan, UCF’s approach to opening in phases will allow us to respond to changing conditions, and we remain positioned to make adjustments as needed. Health care systems across our region are currently stressed due to the influx of cases and demands for testing.
Coronavirus Awareness and Guidance
UCF is joining the Florida Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in monitoring the 2019 Novel Coronavirus, for which cases have been confirmed in the U.S. following an outbreak in China. While no cases have been reported at UCF or in Florida, we have initiated communication, coordination and planning using updated guidance from our state and federal health partners. Coronavirus spreads through the air via coughing and sneezing.
