The PHB Granule Biogenesis Pathway in Caulobacter
Abstract PHB granules are bacterial organelles that store excess carbohydrates in the form of water-insoluble polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). The PHB polymerase, phasin (a small amphipathic protein), and active PHB synthesis are essential for the formation of mature PHB granules in Caulobacter crescentus. Granule formation was found to be initiated by the condensation of self-associating PHB polymerase-GFP into foci, closely followed by the recruitment and condensation of phasin-mCherry.

Correlations between motor competencies, physical activity and self‐concept in children with intellectual disabilities in inclusive education
Relationships between motor competencies, physical activity and self-concept in children with intellectual disabilities There are no studies available on the relationships between motor competencies, physical activity and self-concept in children with intellectual disabilities, as demonstrated in a meta-analysis by Maïano et al. (2019a). Thus, it is unclear whether the assumed effects of the Reciprocal Effects Model also apply to children with intellectual disabilities.
Eckhart: People with lived experience can help end homelessness
In Your Backyard First Community Housing's Second Street Studios in San Jose. File photo. You may have noticed that I have been away for a short period. And during my time away recovering from a mishap, I was able to take a little time to look at how we as a community act toward the homeless population. I recognize some neighborhoods reach out and I’ve seen groups of people and specific organizations that go above and beyond what is asked of them.
Eckhart: Second Street Studios one year later: What has changed?
In Your Backyard A resident of Second Street Studios, San Jose's first permanent supportive housing project, is pictured in this file photo. It has been more than one year since the first tenants, including me, moved into the county’s first permanent supportive housing project, Second Street Studios in downtown San Jose. What has changed? I can answer that in three words: Not a thing. Let me start at the beginning. On May 7, 2019, we got keys to their new homes — a 400 square foot studio apartment.
Eckhart: The painful path to homelessness
First Community Housing's Second Street Studios in San Jose is pictured in this file photo when 150 homeless residents moved in. I was asked to write a short story about my experience in the military and then take that experience and write a quick couple of paragraphs on my experience as a homeless vet. I can’t do that easily because we are talking about two different times in my life. I went into the military right out of high school.
In Your Backyard: How police treat you when you're homeless
Two weeks ago we watched in horror the ugly side of the San Jose Police Department. For many of us, the aggression and cruelty was a surprise. For the writers of the In Your Backyard column, this was the police force they’d known for decades. Below are three accounts of what it meant to face the police in sunny San Jose while homeless. Be advised, there are graphic descriptions of brutality and sexual violence that may be triggering to some. — Frank Ponciano Michael Eckhart: Personalization vs.
The Role of Urban Innovation in Africa’s Emerging Cities in the Time of COVID-19
When we set out to organize an event on urban innovation in Africa as part of this year’s virtual Skoll World Forum week, we knew we wanted to draw attention to Africa’s urban future. Two-thirds of the world’s population expected to live in cities by 2050. Africa and Asia may account for 90 percent of the world’s urban population growth between now and then.
In Your Backyard
Meet the columnists Cecilia Martin Cecilia Martin grew up not knowing her place in life, or what her purpose was. Not even the direction she should go. She says she has struggled her entire life with just about every decision she’s had to make, including becoming an alcoholic as a child and continuing down the road of addiction for decades. Cecilia has faced many dangerous and unsafe situations that ultimately led to homelessness.
Opinion: San Jose project renews homeless man’s sense of dignity
Last week we had the pleasure of partaking in the grand opening celebration of Second Street Studios, the first 100% Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) community in San Jose and Santa Clara County. Permanent Supportive Housing, in many ways, is the best solution to homelessness. A home with on-site health and mental/behavioral services and staff trained to work with us, the formerly chronically homeless residents. We now have a roof over our heads and are building a community together.
