AI-Assisted Line-Field Confocal Optical Coherence Tomography to Detect Subclinical Basal Cell Carcinoma
Key Points Question Can basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) be identified at a subclinical stage with systematic screening of the face using artificial intelligence–assisted line-field confocal optical coherence tomography? Findings In this cross-sectional feasibility study of 150 patients at increased risk for BCC, histologically confirmed subclinical BCCs were identified in 14 patients (9.3%) with a positive predictive value of 83.3%.

Discordance, accuracy and reproducibility study of pathologists’ diagnosis of melanoma and melanocytic tumors - Nature Communications
|
Abstract Accurate melanoma diagnosis is crucial for patient outcomes and reliability of AI diagnostic tools. We assess interrater variability among eight expert pathologists reviewing histopathological images and clinical metadata of 792 melanoma-suspicious lesions prospectively collected at eight German hospitals. Moreover, we provide access to the largest panel-validated dataset featuring dermoscopic and histopathological images with metadata.

Spatial cell graph analysis reveals skin tissue organization characteristic for cutaneous T cell lymphoma - npj Systems Biology and Applications
Abstract Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCLs) are non-Hodgkin lymphomas caused by malignant T cells which migrate to the skin and lead to rash-like lesions which can be difficult to distinguish from inflammatory skin conditions like atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis (PSO). To characterize CTCL in comparison to these differential diagnoses, we carried out multi-antigen imaging on 69 skin tissue samples (21 CTCL, 23 AD, 25 PSO).
Prospective multicenter study using artificial intelligence to improve dermoscopic melanoma diagnosis in patient care - Communications Medicine Original
Abstract Early detection of melanoma, a potentially lethal type of skin cancer with high prevalence worldwide, improves patient prognosis. In retrospective studies, artificial intelligence (AI) has proven to be helpful for enhancing melanoma detection. However, there are few prospective studies confirming these promising results.

Dermatologist-like explainable AI enhances trust and confidence in diagnosing melanoma - Nature Communications
|
Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) systems have been shown to help dermatologists diagnose melanoma more accurately, however they lack transparency, hindering user acceptance. Explainable AI (XAI) methods can help to increase transparency, yet often lack precise, domain-specific explanations. Moreover, the impact of XAI methods on dermatologists’ decisions has not yet been evaluated.

Preclinical evaluation of NF-κB-triggered dendritic cells expressing the viral oncogenic driver of Merkel cell carcinoma for therapeutic vaccination
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare but very aggressive skin tumor that develops after integration of a truncated form of the large T-antigen (truncLT) of the Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCV) into the host’s genome. Therapeutic vaccination with dendritic cells (DCs) loaded with tumor antigens is an active form of immunotherapy, which intends to direct the immune system towards tumors which express the respective vaccination antigens.
