Biologically Relevant Lighting: An Industry Perspective
Introduction The discovery of a novel Intrinsically Photosenstive Retinal Ganglion Cell (ipRGC) in the eye has changed our understanding of the role of light in our everyday lives (Provencio and Foster, 1995; Provencio et al., 1998; Brainard et al., 2001; Thapan et al., 2001; Berson et al., 2002; Panda et al., 2002; Dacey et al., 2005; Güler et al., 2008; Hughes et al., 2016). These ipRGCs contain a photopigment melanopsin with an in-vitro spectral sensitivity around 480 nm.
Modeling Circadian Phototransduction: Quantitative Predictions of Psychophysical Data
Introduction Circadian phototransduction is the process that converts optical radiation incident on the retina to neural signals reaching the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). The circadian phototransduction mechanism can be conceived as a unique neural circuit in the retina with a spectral sensitivity to optical radiation and a response characteristic to different amounts of that optical radiation.
Why Standard Time is better
We have to stop changing the clocks twice a year, but it’s also important to pick the right schedule when we do it. Thousands of scientists say that Standard Time is better, yet legislators are pushing for permanent DST, anyway. The scientists have shown that seeing light in the morning is essential to health, and without it we get more cancer, diabetes, and obesity. We need to balance the needs of night owls and early birds to have a good outcome for everyone.
Circadian Reality
That measurement of Google Cardboard (not a specialized VR device at all) is more than double the 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display cranked up all the way, at a really close distance. I dim that screen like crazy at night. So that means that Google Cardboard with an iPhone is pretty much the brightest screen we’ve ever measured. The iPhone 6 is already a really bright screen, and I never put it 2 inches away from my eye. Except that’s what you do with Cardboard.
