What was your first job as a journalist?
I had worked in high school for the Asbury Park Press. They had a high school program then.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
of course!
How is social media changing news?
in some ways it is more accessible, curated if you follow the right people.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Lois Lane.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means to always be curious, and perhaps dogged.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
sensible emails
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
telephone, emails, websearches, good old fashioned research, contacts
What's your favorite social network?
Facebook but I spend too much time on it
Who do you wish followed you?
Salmon Rushdie, though I have met him, and the NY Post called me a gay version of him.
Why did you become a journalist?
I like the idea of finding out new things, and I have always been a curious person.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yes I was on my high school paper, but moreover, I was the yearbook editor my senior year.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Most recently, the African roots of tango piece for the New York Times, as even Argentines were surprised by it.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Polite persistence when dealing with editors.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Send me an email, then it does not matter the time, but early in the week is better.
