A Century of Restlessness: What It Means To Be A New Yorker Cartoonist
Michael Maslin Profiles the Work and Creative Processes of Cartoonists Liana Finck and Ed Steed For a magazine that’s been around for more than a century, one might suppose that it has had its act together for much of that time. But the truth is: The New Yorker has been restless since its debut in the mid-Roaring Twenties. The Beautifully Macabre Cartoons of Gahan Wilson
On a rare visit to The New Yorker’s cartoon lounge (an area for cartoonists to wait before they trudge in to see the cartoon editor), in the mid-nineties, I sat right next to Gahan Wilson. It was our first meeting, although he and I had been contributing to The New Yorker for about twenty years. Gahan was looking down at his batch, sifting through cartoons that he was about to show the editor.
The Peter Arno Cartoons That Helped Rescue The New Yorker
In the spring of 1925, the young cartoonist Peter Arno gathered together some of his drawings, stuffed them into a folder, and travelled uptown to drop them off at the offices of a new weekly magazine headquartered on West Forty-fifth Street. At the age of twenty-one, Arno had yet to make a dent in the city he’d grown up in; he was two years out of Yale, where he’d contributed cartoons, illustrations, and two covers to the campus humor magazine under the byline Peters.
Turning Life Into Cartoons
This gag was drawn while I was having a particularly difficult time getting the cable repairman to show up for a scheduled appointment. After the umpteenth four-hour window opened and closed without a visit, I decided I needed to vent my frustration. One of the benefits of being a cartoonist, I guess, is that I can kill the cable guy without actually committing a crime. —Ben Schwartz This cartoon comes directly from my childhood.
