Introduction Resilience in urban systems can no longer be treated as the property of a single discipline. Compounded climate, seismic, economic and social shocks expose cities as coupled socio-technical systems embedded in ecological ones, in which cascading disruptions move across the built environment, fiscal instruments, ecosystem function and community life. The ten contributions assembled in this Research Topic span four continents and two Frontiers sections.
