IMF tells advanced economies to bring debt down as borrowing costs rise
The world's advanced economies including the UK and US need to cut borrowing and reduce debt levels following weeks of spiralling government interest costs, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned. In an exclusive interview, Kristalina Georgieva said global economic shocks had been "pushing debt levels up like a staircase not to heaven" but that governments had taken "no action to contain that service cost".

'We simply don't know' - JP Morgan struggling to forecast oil prices due to US-Iran war
Investment banking giant JP Morgan has said it is struggling to predict how oil prices will be impacted by the US-Iran war, telling investors in a rare note that "we simply don't know how to model the endgame". The bank said it "assumed" at the start of the conflict that there would be "economic red lines" that the US would be unwilling the cross, and therefore it believed a deal would have been struck to open up the Strait of Hormuz shipping lane back in June.

US interest rates raised for first time in three years
US interest rates have been raised for the first time in more than three years and could be increased further in a bid to slow rising prices. Rates were hiked to 3.75%-4% from 3.5%-3.75% by the Federal Reserve in a unanimous decision on Wednesday despite fierce opposition from President Donald Trump, who had called for rates to be cut. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said the move was because "inflation is too high and has been for too long", adding that it was a "sober" and "responsible decision".
Carney gambles on the world's biggest investors betting on Canada
It's been a little over 18 months since Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his country's relationship with the United States, based on over a century of tight economic and military cooperation, was "over". Trade talks collapsing, tit-for-tat tariffs, and Donald Trump's talk of making Canada a "51st state" have all fuelled this bitter feud between the two North American neighbours.

Interest rates could rise again across the world – here's why
There's nothing like talk of energy prices and potential higher borrowing costs to remind us that the summer holidays are well and truly over. Surging oil prices have been pushing up what drivers pay at the fuel pumps and eating away at household budgets for months, and concerns remain over whether the economic impact of the US-Iran war will drive the cost of living higher.
US inflation holds steady as diesel prices pass $6 a gallon
Prices in the US rose by 3.4% in the year to August, with the cost of living pushed up by higher gasoline prices, official figures show. The overall inflation rate was unchanged from July, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). It comes ahead of the Federal Reserve making its latest interest rate decision next week, with growing expectations they will be increased in a bid to slow the rate at which prices are rising.

Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
Michael Race - Business reporter When the central bank of the Netherlands confirmed this week that it had moved tonnes of the country's gold out of North America, it said the relocation would make it "better prepared for severe crises". Some 86 tonnes from the combined total of about 313 tonnes held in the US and Canada were relocated to London "in view of increasing geopolitical unrest", it said, so the shiny stuff could be "readily available for use in a crisis situation".
