Hierarchical quasiparticle dynamics in antiferromagnets revealed by time- and momentum-resolved X-ray scattering
Abstract Energy flows among coupled subsystems are essential for ultrafast dynamics and high-speed technologies. In magnetic materials, spin fluctuations —magnons— mediate these flows in ultrafast magnetism. Yet momentum-resolved access to low-energy magnons governing the microscopic dynamics has been lacking.
Opinion | Preservation of rural land is a legacy that lasts
Although I’ve been retired from the ministry for almost eight years now, I continue to engage in ministerial activities when circumstances warrant. This includes “pastoral visits” to former parishioners with whom I had developed a special rapport over my three-decade tenure. A few weeks ago, one of these individuals landed in the hospital, so I sent an email asking if he was open to my stopping by.
Floquet-Bloch valleytronics - Nature Communications
Abstract Upon time-periodic driving of electrons using electromagnetic fields, the emergence of Floquet-Bloch states enables the creation and control of exotic quantum phases. In transition metal dichalcogenides, broken inversion symmetry within each monolayer results in Berry curvature at the K and K′ valley extrema, giving rise to chiroptical selection rules that are fundamental to valleytronics. Here, we bridge the gap between these two concepts and introduce Floquet-Bloch valleytronics.
Opinion | Limiting consumerism might save our souls, if not the world
Almost a quarter of a century ago, a motley assortment of terrorists commandeered four commercial airliners and embarked on a suicide mission against the “Great Satan.” One plane missed its intended target when desperate passengers stormed the cockpit, overpowering the hijackers. Another slammed into the Pentagon, while the remaining two took out Lower Manhattan’s Twin Towers — symbols of America’s economic hegemony. The horrified country entered a state of shock.
Opinion | Tariffs open door to corruption — again
I belong to the more than 50% of Americans who are vested in the stock market. Mind you, as a fiscally cautious investor my exposure to the vicissitudes of the S&P 500 is relatively minor; most of our assets are lodged either in lifetime annuities or in modest interest-bearing CDs. Still, equities do find a place in our portfolio, which has prompted me, during this time of economic turbulence, to watch the markets more closely.
Observation of Floquet states in graphene - Nature Physics
Abstract Floquet engineering—the coherent dressing of matter via time-periodic perturbations—is a mechanism to realize and control emergent phases in materials out of equilibrium. However, its applicability to metallic quantum materials and semimetals such as graphene is an open question.
Momentum-resolved fingerprint of Mottness in layer-dimerized Nb3Br8 - Nature Communications
Abstract Crystalline solids can become band insulators due to fully filled bands, or Mott insulators due to strong electronic correlations. While Mott insulators can theoretically occur in systems with an even number of electrons per unit cell, distinguishing them from band insulators experimentally has remained a longstanding challenge.
Screening the human druggable genome identifies ABHD17B as an anti-fibrotic target in hepatic stellate cells - Nature Communications
Abstract Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are activated with chronic liver injury and transdifferentiate into myofibroblasts, which produce excessive extracellular matrices that form the fibrotic scar. While the progression of fibrosis is understood to be the cause of end-stage liver disease, there are no approved therapies directed at interfering with the activity of HSC myofibroblasts.
Manipulating the symmetry of photon-dressed electronic states - Nature Communications
Abstract Strong light-matter interaction provides opportunities for tailoring the physical properties of quantum materials on the ultrafast timescale by forming photon-dressed electronic states, i.e., Floquet-Bloch states. While the light field can in principle imprint its symmetry properties onto the photon-dressed electronic states, so far, how to experimentally detect and further engineer the symmetry of photon-dressed electronic states remains elusive.
Opinion | We must not succumb to fear, the despot's greatest tool
For the past month or so I have been ploughing through Hannah Arendt’s seminal 500-page work, "The Origins of Totalitarianism," completed in 1960. Arendt is generally regarded as one of the intellectual titans of the late 20th century, and the work in question still is regarded as a masterpiece of socio-political analysis.
Controllable orbital angular momentum monopoles in chiral topological semimetals - Nature Physics
Abstract The emerging field of orbitronics aims to generate and control orbital angular momentum for information processing. Chiral crystals are promising orbitronic materials because they have been predicted to host monopole-like orbital textures, where the orbital angular momentum aligns isotropically with the electron’s crystal momentum. However, such monopoles have not yet been directly observed in chiral crystals.
Opinion | The ‘culture wars’ have long plagued the U.S.
Since retiring from a position that required a wide range of reading — from the history of science to feminist poetry and just about everything in between — I’ve been slowly and methodically culling a personal library of significant proportions. It hasn't been easy. Every time I remove a long-neglected book from the shelves, I engage in an inner debate regarding its possible future utility.
Opinion | Trump evokes appeal of gangster politics
Writing in the February issue of The Atlantic, staff contributor Mark Leibovich looked back to the beginnings of the 2016 presidential campaign when Donald Trump was gaining traction in the contest to succeed Barack Obama. Invited to deliver the commencement address at the City College of New York that year, Michelle Obama used the occasion to criticize candidate Trump’s incendiary rhetoric. “That is not who we are,” she admonished her audience.
Quantum Optics Measurement Scheme for Quantum Geometry and Topological Invariants
We show how a quantum optical measurement scheme based on heterodyne detection can be used to explore geometrical and topological properties of condensed matter systems. Considering a 2D material placed in a cavity with a coupling to the environment, we compute correlation functions of the photons exiting the cavity and relate them to the hybrid light-matter state within the cavity.
Suppression of heating by multicolor driving protocols in Floquet-engineered strongly correlated systems
Abstract Heating effects in Floquet-engineered systems are detrimental to the control of physical properties. In this paper, we show that the heating of periodically driven strongly correlated systems can be suppressed by multicolor driving, i.e., by applying auxiliary excitations which interfere with the absorption processes from the main drive. We focus on the Mott insulating single-band Hubbard model and study the effects of multicolor driving with nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory.
Probing magnetic orbitals and Berry curvature with circular dichroism in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering - npj Quantum Materials
Abstract Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) can probe localized excitations at selected atoms in materials, including particle-hole transitions between the valence and conduction bands. These transitions are governed by fundamental properties of the corresponding Bloch wave functions, including orbital and magnetic degrees of freedom, and quantum geometric properties such as the Berry curvature.
Opinion | America's stunning short-sightedness on the climate crisis
It has been both illuminating and disconcerting to follow the opinion polls leading up to the midterm elections. Over the past few months, attitudes and expectations keep shifting. At first the economy took precedence, then abortion rights and protection of our democracy, and now, in the home stretch, it’s back to inflation and high prices at the pump.
Opinion | The ageless, violent scourge of male pride
The headline on the local madison.com newsfeed has become so repetitious that I rarely scroll down to read the details. It always begins with “shots fired” at some location on the east, south or north side of the city, adding that one or more spent cartridge casings were retrieved by responding police officers. Not infrequently, bullets penetrate automobiles, houses, and occasionally living people. Sometimes the offender is identified and apprehended, but often not.
Phys. Rev. X 12, 011019 (2022) - Polarization-Modulated Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy: Toward Circular Dichroism without Circular Photons and Bloch Wave-function Reconstruction
Abstract Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is the most powerful technique to investigate the electronic band structure of crystalline solids. To completely characterize the electronic structure of topological materials, one needs to go beyond band structure mapping and access information about the momentum-resolved Bloch wave function, namely, orbitals, Berry curvature, and topological invariants.
In My Opinion: 'Concierge' ITAD services present new opportunity
An executive explains why third-party remarketing service providers may be a good option for processors. | Creative Stock Studio/Shutterstock Over the last decade, the industry has seen hundreds of millions of investment dollars pour into the ITAD community through strategic acquisitions and personnel hires.
Quantum simulation of 2D antiferromagnets with hundreds of Rydberg atoms
Abstract Quantum simulation using synthetic systems is a promising route to solve outstanding quantum many-body problems in regimes where other approaches, including numerical ones, fail1. Many platforms are being developed towards this goal, in particular based on trapped ions2,3,4, superconducting circuits5,6,7, neutral atoms8,9,10,11 or molecules12,13.
April 2020 finden keine Veranstaltungen statt.
Local Berry curvature signatures in dichroic angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy from two-dimensional materials
INTRODUCTION The discovery of the remarkable physical consequences of the Berry curvature of wave functions in materials has spurred progress across many research fields in physics. In periodic solids, the most notable examples are topological insulators (TIs) and superconductors (1, 2), in which a global topological invariant emerges from momentum-space integrals of the Berry curvature.
Phagocytosis assays with different pH-sensitive fluorescent particles and various readouts
Phagocytosis plays a pivotal role in the uptake and elimination of bacteria, apoptotic and necrotic cells. This leads to clearance of pathogens and maintenance of tissue homeostasis [1]. Defective phagocytosis is associated with severe diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [2,3]. Phagocytosis is a fundamental process by which cells engulf extracellular particles with a size of >0.5 μm [1].

Michael A. Schuler: B Corps allow capitalists to follow their 'better instincts'
Although the Bible (as well as sacred scriptures representing other faith traditions) has precious little to say about human reproductive matters, it does place a great deal of emphasis on social justice, economic fairness and creation care. Some 2,000 references to those few topics can be culled from the two Testaments. As a preacher, at times I found occasion to support my ethical brief against contemporary corporate culture with citations from holy writ.
Yoga intervention and reminder e-mails for reducing cancer-related fatigue - a study protocol of a randomized controlled trial
Abstract Background Almost 90% of cancer patients suffer from symptoms of fatigue during treatment. Supporting treatments are increasingly used to alleviate the burden of fatigue. This study examines the short-term and long-term effects of yoga on fatigue and the effect of weekly reminder e-mails on exercise frequency and fatigue symptoms. Methods The aim of the first part of the study will evaluate the effectiveness of yoga for cancer patients with mixed diagnoses reporting fatigue.
Michael A. Schuler: Is there a fascism in our future?
Newly-elected Madison School Board member Ali Muldrow recently found herself at the center of controversy when, in a Facebook post, she compared conditions for juvenile detainees at the Dane County Jail to Nazi concentration camps. Both local law enforcement officials and Jewish leaders pushed back, and Muldrow quickly apologized, thanking critics for helping “broaden her perspective.” Muldrow was hardly the first to lend credence to this unfortunate parallel.
Michael Schuler: We have the tools to fight climate change. Will we use them?
As I approach my seventh decade as a moderately well-off retiree, the future of Social Security and Medicare concern me less than how intensifying climate change will affect future generations. Groucho Marx once remarked, “Why should I care about posterity? What’s posterity ever done for me?” That’s one way to evade the issue, I suppose. But Groucho was being facetious, while many today seem to have opted for a more literal interpretation. Perhaps that’s too harsh.
The Cody Gunfight Gone Bad
Alleged Shooter of Spectators at Gunfight Show Has Outlaw Record BY RETT NELSON It wasn’t supposed to happen, and the police recently imposed safety guidelines so it won’t happen again, but last summer something went terribly wrong at the Cody gunfight. On July 29, 2016, twelve actors gathered on 11th Street for the nightly show that mimics Old West shootouts, a summertime tradition. The crowd waited for the show with anticipation, but what they got that night, no one expected.
The Road to Koko Bongo’s
Chacala, Nayarit coast, Mexico. The Ghost of Old Mexico Haunts the Modern World BY DAVID S. LEWIS On a park bench in San Pancho, Mexico, a beach town one hour north of Puerto Vallarta, an old woman sat stoically in a square she had probably visited all her life. We’ve seen this, an elderly person sitting quietly in a park, at peace in the autumn of life. But this woman, seemingly at peace, with poise and composure, shared little in common with those around her.
The Scalp Dance - Montana Pioneer
Sioux Scalp Dance, George Catlin, 1830s Counting Coups, an Eyewitness Account from the 1800s BY RICHARD IRVING DODGE All the religious dances embody the same idea, and are conducted upon much the same general principle as the great camp-meetings of some of our Christian denominations. The time and place are fixed by the medicine man, and ample notice given. The “scalp dance,” is next to the medicine dance in importance, and is the most common of all the ceremonial dances of the Indians.
Antique Roadshow Star Appraises Montana
Timothy Gordon appraising at Old Faithful Lodge, Yellowstone. Celebrity Appraiser Tim Gordon Values Big Sky Artifacts BY MARIA WYLLIE 06/09/17 An old hat, a piece of broken stained glass, a wobbly chair. Upon first glance, all these items appear worn and useless. One might even mistake them for junk. After all, these are all just things—and things that may not provide much practical use in today’s world. Your kids wonder why you keep them. That is, until they hear the stories behind them.
The Pursuit of Happiness in Ennis, Montana
Ennis, Mont., July 4, 2016 BY DAVID S. LEWIS The Fourth of July should be reaffirmed as our nation’s quintessential holiday. The date itself has a ring to it. Few others resonate with such meaning. Saying it aloud—the intonation brings a tide of images, writings, battles, heroes and acts of courage. Men of insight, men in granite, as Van Morrison put it.
James Redford, Filmmaking for a Higher Purpose
BY MARIA MACVEAN Storytelling runs in James Redford’s blood. The documentary filmmaker grew up watching some of the best American movies come together thanks to his father, Robert Redford. Through his dad’s involvement in various film projects, James, who goes by Jamie, learned how stories are told, and what motivated his father to select the projects he did.
Meeting Wolves Face to Face—What's That Like? - Montana Pioneer
Sekani, Howlers Inn, by Thomas Burns Howlers Inn Proprietors Describe Initial Encounters BY DAVID S. LEWIS She was the first family member to set foot in the wolf enclosure, Aurelie Burns told the Pioneer. The outgoing owner of the sanctuary, Mary Martha Bahn, told Aurelie to remove her dangling earrings before getting close to the wolves—because they could catch their paws on them. Did that worry you, I asked? “Yes, a little bit.
Another Yellowstone Park Whistleblower Steps Forward
Roosevelt Arch, north entrance to Yellowstone. Feds Failed to Acquire Crucial Testimony Before Drawing Conclusions BY DAVID S. LEWIS 07-07-17 A former Yellowstone National Park employee contacted The Montana Pioneer recently on the heels of a report released by the Office of Inspector General and published in the Pioneer’s May 2017 issue. We met personally with the whistleblower, at his home, to discuss his first hand experiences after having worked at the Park for decades.
Who Shot Yellowstone’s White Wolf?
YNP white wolf, NPS/ Neal Herbert. BY KAREN DAVIS 6/11/17 A preliminary necropsy of the injured, well-known white wolf discovered April 11 in Yellowstone National Park shows she was shot—and within the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park, officials believe. Discovered by hikers inside the park near Gardiner, Mont., the Canyon Pack alpha female was euthanized by park staff due to her severe injuries.
Kevin Costner Stars in TV Series Yellowstone
BY KAREN E. DAVIS Planting their cowboy boots squarely in our backyard, the Paramount Network has created a new modern-day TV western called Yellowstone, starring Oscar-winner Kevin Costner. Costner, following in a long line of movie stars taken by the state, calls Paramount’s Yellowstone his “postcard to Montana.” The series, loosely set just outside the park, debuts June 20. Shooting locations include Living-ston, Helena, the Butte area, the Crow Reservation, Darby, and Hamilton.
Michael Schuler: Climate change at the top of my ballot Nov. 6
As the 2018 midterm elections draw near, I find ample reasons to reject the candidacies of those representing the Republican establishment. Their policies include: a cynical federal tax overhaul favoring the ultra-wealthy; ongoing attempts to eviscerate the Affordable Care Act; draconian family separation policies; anti-democratic voter suppression measures; and duplicitous efforts to transform the federal judiciary into a rubber-stamp for reactionary legislation.
Testing the validity of a self-administered questionnaire version of the transition dyspnea index in COPD patients
Testing the validity of a self-administered questionnaire version of the transition dyspnea index in COPD patients Andreas von Leupoldt, Thomas Reijnders, Michael Schuler, Michael Wittmann, Danijel Jelusic, Sibylle Petersen, Konrad Schultz European Respiratory Journal Sep 2016, 48 (suppl 60) PA3745; DOI: 10.1183/13993003.congress-2016.PA3745
Loneliness as predictor of health status and rehabilitation success in patients with COPD
AbstractPsychological factors have been shown to influence course and treatment of COPD, but little is known about the impact of social factors. Subjectively experienced loneliness has been demonstrated to predict morbidity in various chronic diseases, but its impact on COPD remains poorly understood. Furthermore, the associations of loneliness with disease-specific fears in COPD are not known.
Leventhal’s common-sense model and asthma control: Do illness representations predict success of an asthma rehabilitation?
This study investigates whether illness representations predict changes in asthma control or vice versa. Illness perceptions and asthma control were assessed in N = 113 asthma patients at the begin/end of an inpatient rehabilitation. Bivariate cross-lagged panel analyses showed that the illness representation dimensions Personal control, Consequences, Coherence, and Emotional representation predicted the change in asthma control, but asthma control did not predict illness representations.
