Extreme heat’s impact on our health demands we take action
Amid global heat waves unprecedented in human times, The Seattle Times published a piece regarding prevention of deaths during Washington heat waves. The article referenced a report from the Climate Impacts Group at University of Washington that concluded the 2021 Washington heat dome caused the deaths of 441 Washingtonians, far higher than previous estimates.
Pandemics and air pollution collide as a global health threat
April 10, 2020 at 10:01 am Updated April 10, 2020 at 10:54 am By and Special to The Times With more than 80 years of combined experience caring for patients and managing health-care systems, we have followed the COVID-19 pandemic with a sense of foreboding. Health professionals are seeing climate risks
OPINION Dr. Michael Soman, Bainbridge Island Published 10:34 a.m. PT June 26, 2019 As a physician, I see the toll climate change is taking on the health, safety and well-being of our citizens and our communities. The impacts are devastating and can be fatal, from heat illness and worsening respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD, to declining mental health and insect-borne disease. Personally, I see the way my grandsons cough and wheeze when smoke from wildfires pollutes the air we breath.
Climate change is killing our patients
The iconic photo that defines climate change has changed from the polar bear on a shrinking ice floe to a child wheezing for breath in a hospital emergency room. A recent report from The Lancet, the world’s most widely read medical journal, along with recent October reports from the U.S. Climate Assessment and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) all confirm what we and other physicians are seeing in Washington and beyond — climate change is harming and killing our patients today.
Physicians oppose methanol refinery
Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (WPSR) represents over 800 healthcare professionals. As members of WPSR, we are deeply concerned about the methanol refinery proposed for Kalama. (“How a Chinese businessman is going toe-to-toe with Pacific Northwest environmentalists on Methanol”, Seattle Times, July 6, 2017.) This would be the largest such plant in the world, consuming more fracked natural gas than any other sector of our economy.
Letter: Appreciates that Reichert has joined Bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus
Emily Goodell did an excellent job in her Aug. 4 article on air quality issues in the area related to British Columbia fires. As a physician active in public health issues and health impacts of climate change, I must make the connection between the wildfires we are increasingly seeing in many parts of the continent and the climate change that threatens our health and our planet.
