VIVIAN VAN TASSEL AND THE SECRET OF MIDNIGHT… | Kirkus Reviews
From the Captain Underpants series , Vol. 9 Is this the end? Well, no…the series will stagger on through at least one more scheduled sequel. Sure signs that the creative wells are running dry at last, the Captain’s ninth, overstuffed outing both recycles a villain (see Book 4) and offers trendy anti-bullying wish fulfillment. Not that there aren’t pranks and envelope-pushing quips aplenty.
Vivian Van Tassel and the Secret of Midnight Lake
Chapter 1: The Chicken Pox 1 The Chicken Pox THE GIRL KNELT motionless before her saber, her eyes tightly shut. She pressed the hilt to her forehead with such force that the jagged imprint almost broke the skin. “C’mon, Vivy, breathe,” she whispered to herself, doing everything she could to control the fury that surged through her. A whistle shrieked, ending her troubled quiet. She stood and padded onto the fencing strip. The dimly lit gymnasium quieted as her clubmates regathered around the mat.

Dungeons and Dragons Art and Arcana: A Visual History
In just the past decade or so, tabletop role-playing games, particularly Dungeons & Dragons, have seen a popularity surge. It is no longer just the realm of geek boys hiding in dimly lit basements, rolling dice to vanquish demons instead of holding a girl's hand.
Review: Dungeons & Dragons: Art & Arcana: A Visual History
By Michael Witwer, Kyle Newman, Jon Peterson, and Sam Witwer Penguin Random House, out now A sumptuous visual guide to Dungeons & Dragons… and much more If you think that this is book simply for those who love role playing games, think again. As someone who has not participated, I came to this very much as an outsider, but thanks to the excellent presentational work, both in the text, choice of illustrations and design, I can now understand the attraction far more.

Real or Frakes: Remembering 'Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction'
If you grew up watching Star Trek: The Next Generation like I did, then you probably love Jonathan Frakes (AKA Commander William Riker). And if you love Jonathan Frakes, then you may have also been into his post-Star Trek docudrama, Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction, which he hosted between 1998 and 2002. If you don’t know the show, it went something like this: Frakes comes out and introduces a scenario that seems far-fetched, which is followed by a dramatization/re-enactment of the scenario.

This is not to ignore D&D’s impact on other video game types, most notably first-person shooters. John Carmack and John Romero largely created this monstrously successful genre of video game with their release of Castle Wolfenstein and their subsequent release of the legendary Doom.
After 40 Years, Dungeons & Dragons Still Brings Players To The Table
If you play today's massively multiplayer online role-playing games — World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy, for example — you have a 1970s tabletop game to thank, says author Michael Witwer. Witwer has just written a biography of Gary Gygax, the co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons. "Even first person shooters like Call of Duty have some of the roots at least in tabletop role-playing games," he tells NPR's Ari Shapiro. From both a gaming — and non-gaming standpoint — D&D had far-reaching effects.
The Bane of Banality: Frodo Baggins
In the world of fantasy and science fiction, we expect our protagonists to be men and women of action; people who make hard and risky choices with potentially dire consequences. And while we love heroic characters that can accomplish great feats of strength and agility, sometimes the best characters are ordinary people who find a way to overcome extraordinary circumstances.
