Wilderness debate evolves as founding legislation turns 60
CABINET MOUNTAINS WILDERNESS — A little less than a half-mile up the trail to Leigh Lake, just about when the incline begins to get annoying, there’s a light blue sign screwed to a tree. Over the years, people have scratched their initials into it. Others took the time to complete their first name. The sea of jagged letters surrounds the words that spell out this piece of wood’s primary purpose: to let hikers know when they enter the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness Area.
Idaho begins studying turkeys north of Coeur d'Alene Original
Tribune April 5, 2024 at 10:03 PM Apr. 5—Micah Ellstrom spent a good chunk of his winter chasing turkeys. From December to early March, Ellstrom, a biologist with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, baited walk-in traps in the woods north of Coeur d'Alene to attract turkeys so he could fit them with GPS backpacks. The backpacks are attached to 30 hens in North Idaho. It's all part of a new study looking at the birds' nesting ecology.

Jan. 26—A bill seeking to ban the sale of fur products in Washington has raised the hackles of trappers and fly tiers. Senate Bill 6294, sponsored by Sen. Derek Stanford, D-Bothell, would prohibit the sale of fur products in the state and impose a fine on people who violate the law.

Little is known about waterfowl in Pend Oreille Valley. Kalispel Tribe is trying to change that
USK, Wash. — Standing on the banks of a slough off the Pend Oreille River, TC Peterson cradled a mallard like a football. He held out its right leg between two fingers. With his other hand, he used a set of pliers to squeeze together a small metal band just above the duck’s ankle. He angled the pliers in different directions until the two ends of the band were aligned and touching. With one final pinch, the band made a small click. “If you hear a click, you did it right,” Peterson said.
The volcanic eruption that inspired an Antarctic literary epic
Kiwi scientist Werner Giggenbach abseils over the lip of the Inner Crater of Erebus. The volcano erupted shortly after this picture was taken. Colin Monteath / Supplied The moment that drove Colin Monteath to write a book about Mt Erebus, the mercurial Antarctic volcano, came in 1978. That was the year he first infiltrated its inner crater and then manned the ropes while a colleague descended, only for the mountain to erupt in their faces.
Twelve peaks, 11 days: Washington duo climbs tallest volcanoes in the Cascade Range - The Daily Chronicle
Michael Wright / The Spokesman-Review (TNS) Something out in the darkness was staring at them. Nick Burson and Marc McPherson were on their way down from the summit of Mount Jefferson, a 10,502-foot volcano in the Oregon portion of the Cascade Range. It was late, sometime between 10 and 11 p.m. When they moved off trail to get around a downed tree, led by their headlamps, they spotted a set of glowing eyes, maybe 50 yards away. "My first thought was it was probably not a deer," Burson said.

Kia MVP Ladder: Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic both make big moves up
The calendar flips to 2023 in two days, yet the logjam atop the Kia Race to the MVP Ladder remains stacked. What better way to start the New Year? “The history of the game is written by the players, and it was written again tonight,” Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said Tuesday night after witnessing superstar guard Luka Doncic wow the world with arguably the best individual performance we’ve seen so far this season. See, these players aren’t dropping those history-writing pens anytime soon.

10 years before Surfside, a building collapsed in New Zealand
On June 24, the Champlain Towers South condominium complex in Surfside collapsed. The death toll has risen to nearly 100. On the face of it, it seems like an isolated tragedy. But a New York Times story recently reported that preliminary inspections of the rubble suggested that the structural elements of the condo lacked adequate steel reinforcement. And that this shortcoming may have contributed to its collapse. In New Zealand, that news took us back to Feb. 22, 2011.

State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. said on Thursday, March 11, that he supports the decision by the New York State Assembly leadership to begin an “inquiry” into the possible impeachment of Mr. Cuomo.
Humor: To Air Is Human

We’ve tried every remedy from pills (either useless or too strong), listening to New Age music, listening to white noise machines, warm milk, wine, turkey meat, exercising to exhaustion, but nothing has worked.
The Search For Ancient History At Local Beaches
Laura Mayo shows off the ancient arrowhead she found on a local beach recently while hunting for artifacts with Orson Frisbee. One day, several thousand years ago, a Native American hunter picked up an especially hard rock, one he had probably used many times before, and began whacking away at a small piece of carefully chosen milky gray quartz he likely picked up on a nearby shoreline of Gardiners Bay.
Signs That I’m Starting to Get Old...
Thumbnail image from Pixabay By Michael Wright Shortly before this past Memorial Day, I came to the painful realization and had to accept the fact, that I’m getting old! It wasn’t because of any particular pains, ailments, maladies or infirmities. It wasn’t due to any change in the color of my hair nor due to additional hair growth in my ears or nostrils. And I did NOT give in and begin playing shuffleboard at the clubhouse.
Do Catholics have to care for creation?
The church recognizes climate change as a problem that must be addressed. By Michael Wright | Print | Article Justice Many people are familiar with the Book of Genesis referring to humanity’s “dominion” over the earth (1:28). We often misunderstand this to mean we humans have free rein to exploit creation for our own gain, often at others’ expense. Rather, God, in providing for us through a life-giving world, bestowed upon humanity the responsibility of stewardship.

Another nail in the South Coast’s coffin
I was born and raised in Coos Bay and graduated from North Bend High School in 1989. That was before the federal government shut down the forests and lumber industry here on the South Coast with the spotted owl. Since then, Coos Bay has been dying slowly. The cap and trade law that our State Senator Arnie Roblan and other politicians in Salem are considering now could prevent my kids and yours from having the opportunity to hold meaningful jobs here. I’m not a part of a political party.

Silent Grace
I read Shūsaku Endō’s Silence a few months ago, and at the end of chapter four, made a long annotation that opened, “In this letter, we are beginning to see that grace lies in the silence.” There was never silence or stillness at Mass for me growing up. I was, and am, afflicted with attention deficit disorder.
