What was your first job as a journalist?
An on-site visit and feature article for a green blog about a new wind farm in New York State. It solidified my love for the profession.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. In fact, my grandfather's is next to me at this very moment.
How is social media changing news?
Social media is taking the news cycle away from what was once a scheduled three-course meal and turning it into a all-you-can-eat buffet.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Clark Kent. The guy always has a knack for finding himself in the middle of the most interesting stories.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email is the best option. I can then decide if a phone call or email exchange is necessary for more details.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Smartphone, laptop, tablet, audio recorder, Skype, and various online resources.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram - There's great beauty (and power) in simplicity.
Why did you become a journalist?
To inform, inspire, and creatively address topics and themes that deserve more attention in the world.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Never stop writing. If you can't get your foot in the door of an established media presence, build your own using Wordpress. Keep typing.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Out on my 55-acre apple farm outside Ithaca, NY chopping wood, pruning trees, and breathing deep.
