With Latitude 7320 Detachable, Dell Brings New Life to Enterprise Windows Tablets
(Image: Dell) Just when you thought enterprise-class Windows tablets were dead, they come back with a vengeance. The newest offering is Dell’s Latitude 7320 Detachable, a 13-inch tablet with an integrated kickstand and optional removable keyboard. The Latitude 7320, launched on Tuesday, is designed to compete with the Microsoft Surface Pro 7+ for Business at a time when many white-collar workers are continuing to work remotely amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Huawei MateBook X Pro (2021)
Originally an excellent (albeit quirky) ultraportable laptop when it was introduced in 2018, the Huawei MateBook X Pro has seen few noteworthy positive changes over the past three years. But during that time, competing laptops have also made significant advances, and all Huawei products have become exponentially more difficult to buy in the US. The 2021 version of the MateBook X Pro is therefore merely an average premium laptop. Can You Buy a Huawei MateBook X Pro in the US?
Does the Apple M1 Actually Make Sense in the New iMac?
A slimmer-than-ever Apple iMac with a 24-inch screen arrives next month with a completely redesigned exterior and some significant changes to the internal components. The big one? The Apple M1. After making its debut on the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro, and the Mac mini six months ago, the M1 chip is at last coming to the iMac. Ditching Intel Core processors in favor of silicon designed in-house was a ground-breaking achievement for Apple’s laptops.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 (15-Inch)
The 15-inch version of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 (starts at $1,299; $1,499 as tested) offers one of the most refined computing experiences of any Windows laptop. With two color options and excellent build quality, it’s a standout big-screen notebook. New for 2021, processor options from both AMD and Intel make this fourth-generation laptop's performance even better. The Surface Laptop 4 now cinches an Editors’ Choice award as our top pick among premium 15-inch models.
Samsung's April Galaxy Unpacked Event May Include an Exynos Laptop
Amid skyrocketing PC shipments, Samsung on Tuesday teased a Galaxy Unpacked product event that's rumored to include the launch of a groundbreaking new laptop. While Unpacked events are usually reserved for flashy phone launches, the April 28 presentation may shake things up. “The most powerful Galaxy is coming,” the invitation teases, which could be a reference to a Samsung laptop powered by its own silicon, rather than the usual AMD or Intel processors.
Dell Latitude 7320 2-in-1
Snazzy consumer laptops like the Dell XPS 13 aren't often issued to employees at large enterprises. This occasionally comes up as a point of consternation when toters of bulging, black, IT-approved ThinkPads gaze enviously at the borderless 4K displays and svelte chassis of laptops that managers won't let them use for work. To appease that envy, Dell has added plenty of innovative, user-friendly features to its latest Latitude 7320 (starts at $1,559; $1,964 as tested).
Dell Inspiron 15 3000 (3505)
You can find plenty of decent Chromebooks below $400, but relatively few inspiring Windows laptops priced that low. One exception is Dell’s Inspiron 3000 series, which comes in three screen and chassis sizes. The Inspiron 15 3000 configuration reviewed here has a 15-inch screen, starts at just $293, and rings up at $369 as tested.
First Tests: Adobe Photoshop for M1 Macs Is Quick, But Not Always 1.5x Faster
Adobe claims that the latest version of Photoshop, released on Wednesday, could run 50% faster on the Apple M1-equipped MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini. The first benchmark tests—including our own—are now available, and they don’t quite match this claim, but they do suggest that Photoshop users will see significant improvements over older versions of Photoshop that don’t run natively on the M1 processor.
HP Slim Desktop (S01-aF0020)
The stylish, compact HP Slim Desktop (model S01-aF0020) is a cheap-and-cheerful desktop PC that can serve a wide variety of uses around the house. Need a homework machine for your kids? Fed up with monthly streaming-service subscriptions and want to dust off your movie DVDs? This small desktop, which retails for $379.99 at Amazon, can fill those roles and more, though its tepid AMD Athlon laptop-weight processor and lack of USB Type-C ports disqualifies it as your daily driver.
HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7
Corporate IT managers seeking to buy their executives well-built convertible laptops might think first of various Lenovo ThinkPad and Dell Latitude models, but the HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7 (starts at $1,649; $2,499 as tested) makes a compelling alternative.
Dell Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1 (7506)
Premium-design laptops with 15-inch and larger screens can cost a pretty penny. Dell makes some of the best, with its XPS 15 and XPS 17 offering style, performance, and plenty of innovative features, but with the better configurations jutting up well into four figures. If your budget is more down-to-earth, the Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1 reviewed here could be a reasonable alternative to a flagship big-screen laptop.
Asus ROG XG Mobile
The latest AAA games require more graphics horsepower for an immersive experience than the typical ultraportable laptop can provide. Dedicated gamers will often buy a beefy gaming laptop that can run such titles to their satisfaction, or reserve gameplay for their desktop PCs at home. A third option is to connect an external GPU like the Asus ROG XG Mobile to an ultraportable laptop.
First Ryzen 5000 Mobile Benchmarks: With 'Zen 3,' AMD Pumps Up Its Laptop-CPU Muscle
Intel’s Core i7 and Core i9 H-Series chips are no longer a slam-dunk choice for CPUs to power high-end gaming and multimedia-content-creation laptops. There’s a new kid on the block: AMD Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9 H-Series processors. And they just got even more powerful.
Asus ROG Flow X13
As powerful as it is compact, the Asus ROG Flow X13 (starts at $2,999; $3,299 as tested) is a 2-in-1 convertible gaming laptop that stands just 0.62 inch tall, weighs 2.9 pounds, and still manages to deliver a reasonably comfortable gaming experience at a 1080p resolution on many titles.
Will 2021 Be the Year of the Haptic Touchpad?
Haptic touchpads have been a staple of Apple MacBooks for a few years, but they haven’t really caught on among Windows laptop manufacturers. That could change soon. These nifty input methods, with a tiny vibrating motor instead of a physical clicking mechanism, are poised to go mainstream over the next few months. At CES this week, Lenovo launched its second major laptop with haptic technology for the US market, following haptic’s debut on the Yoga 9i last fall.
First Tests: Intel Iris Xe Max Is No Gaming Powerhouse
Preliminary performance tests suggest that Intel’s first discrete graphics processor for laptops, the Iris Xe Max, provides only a modest improvement over the performance of the graphics silicon that is already built into the chip giant’s latest "Tiger Lake" CPUs. We tested a handful of popular games, including Counter Strike: Global Offensive, on an Xe Max-equipped Dell Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1 laptop, and found slightly worse performance than gamers can expect from an equivalent laptop that...
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold
It’s somewhat surprising that the world’s first foldable-screen PC is a ThinkPad. When foldable screens debuted on phones last year, they were expensive gimmicks with questionable durability. ThinkPads are mostly expensive laptops, to be sure, but they’re legendary for being the opposite of gimmicky and flimsy.
Apple MacBook Pro 13-Inch (M1, Late 2020)
Long an essential tool for multimedia editors, software developers, and other creative professionals, Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Pro ($1,299 as tested) is also appealing to mainstream Mac users seeking higher performance than the MacBook Air in a laptop that’s smaller and less expensive than the flagship 16-inch MacBook Pro. The latest 13-inch MacBook Pro reviewed here is as sleek as ever more powerful than before, thanks to Apple’s new M1 processor.
Quantum Computing: A Bubble Ready to Burst?
Quantum computers, like this IBM model, look like science fiction come to life. (Credit: Graham Carlow for IBM) The massive intersection of James Avenue and East Boughton Road in Bolingbrook, Illinois, looks like many other crossroads in suburban America.
What Is the Apple M1 Chip?
For the first time in nearly 15 years, Apple’s newest MacBooks and Mac mini don’t come with Intel processors. Instead, they use the brand-new Apple M1 chip, unveiled on Tuesday as a powerful replacement for the many generations of Intel CPUs that have powered Apple computers since 2006. The M1 is the first appearance of the new paradigm that Apple has dubbed Apple Silicon. The new Macs available for pre-order now with the M1 include the MacBook Air, the 13-inch MacBook Pro, and the Mac mini.
Astrohaus Freewrite Traveler
A bottle of perfectly aged bubbly might cost you hundreds of dollars, but is any tipple truly worth that much to your taste buds when you drink it? You could ask a similar question of your fingers and the Freewrite Traveler, a stripped-down, compact laptop with an E Ink screen that bills itself as a distraction-free tool for professional writers. The $429 list price seems sky-high for something that’s essentially an electronic typewriter with a cheap-feeling plastic exterior.
Dell XPS 13 (9310)
The newest Dell XPS 13 is one of the first ultraportable laptops to come with Intel's latest 11th Generation "Tiger Lake" CPUs, offering speedy, efficient computing performance and long battery life. This 2.8-pound laptop also has an exceptional 13.4-inch display and a gorgeous chassis, all of which combine to make it our Editors' Choice pick among premium Windows ultraportables.
HP EliteBook 840 G7
Competition in the 14-inch business laptop segment has long been fierce, with Dell and Lenovo regularly adding new features and slimmer sizes to perennial favorites like the Latitude and ThinkPad. HP's answer to these laptops is the EliteBook 840 G7 (starts at $1,254.76; $2,199 as tested), updated for the seventh generation with a smaller chassis, an improved keyboard, and longer battery life. It's not quite as impressive as the latest ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8, but it's an excellent alternative.
Snapdragon Processors Have a Future in Chromebooks
Acer Chromebook Spin 513 (Image: Acer) The brightest immediate future for Snapdragon-powered PCs isn’t 5G-capable flagships like the Lenovo Flex 5G. It’s Chromebooks. Microsoft and Qualcomm have spent years positioning Snapdragon-powered laptops like the Flex 5G and Microsoft Surface Pro X as superior to their Intel-powered counterparts, to limited success.
WD Black P10 Game Drive
One of the most effective ways for PC gamers to stretch their budgets is to buy a PC with a relatively small but speedy internal SSD that can hold one or two games at a time, and keep most of the rest of their library on a massive (but slower and less expensive) portable external hard drive like the WD Black P10 Game Drive. At $119.99 for the 4TB version we tested, the P10 is not only cost-effective, but it’s also designed with an edgy aesthetic that will please many gamers.
WD Black P50 Game Drive SSD
With flash-based memory technology so inexpensive these days, bargain external solid-state-drives (SSDs) can be found in every corner of the internet. As a result, manufacturers are brainstorming creative ways to differentiate their drives beyond just price, such as adding new interface technologies and unique styling that appeals to certain demographics—especially gamers. Western Digital takes this route with the WD Black P50 Game Drive SSD ($191.99 for 1TB).

With streamlined component configurations and the omission of some of the more futuristic Surface Laptop 3 features, the new Surface Laptop Go will appeal to price-sensitive buyers who need a sensible workhorse laptop for light computing tasks. The $699 configuration reviewed here is the best one for most people.
LaCie 1big Dock
Sept. 24, 2020 If you’re a pro photographer, a video editor, or other creative professional, plugging all of your peripherals into an ultraportable laptop with just a handful of USB ports is impossible without buying a bouquet of adapters and hubs. Nor will you likely be able to fit all of your work onto your laptop’s internal drive, especially if you’re shooting and editing at 4K resolution or in RAW formats.
The Best Desktop Computers for 2020
Smartphones are ubiquitous and astonishingly capable. Snazzy, innovative laptop designs are constantly evolving. So where does that leave the venerable desktop PC? You'll find plenty of them for sale, to be sure, and innovation never stops in the desktop market. But more people now than ever consider desktops an anachronism, heading straight to the laptop aisle instead for their next computer purchase. It's not always the right move.
Samsung SSD 980 Pro
Sept. 22, 2020 PC builders and upgraders looking for the one of the fastest mainstream SSDs on the market—and rocking a late-model AMD Ryzen desktop—should take a deep, long, lusting look at the Samsung SSD 980 Pro. An M.2 drive with support for the latest iteration of the PCI Express bus, the SSD 980 Pro will speed up application and game launches, as well as big file transfers, with its maximum rated throughput of 7,000MBps.
Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 3 Chromebook
Sept. 4, 2020 With excellent build quality and a 360-degree hinge, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 3 Chromebook ($339) is proof that capable, well-designed 2-in-1 Chromebooks don't have to be expensive (looking at you, $999 Google Pixelbook). The Flex 3 has a handsome almond-colored metal exterior, reasonably long battery life, and even an SD card reader to let you easily supplement its 64GB of internal storage.
Thunderbolt 3 vs. USB-C: What's the Difference?
Need to charge a mobile device, or connect a peripheral to a PC or Mac? You’ll probably need to use some flavor of USB port, or a Thunderbolt port. In their newest iterations, however, choosing between the two (or even just telling them apart!) can be confusing if you have a late-model PC or Mac. That's because of the emergence of the USB Type-C ("USB-C," for short) and Thunderbolt 3 interfaces in the last few years.
Intel's 'Tiger Lake' Laptop CPUs: Slightly Faster, Much Smarter
By Tom Brant Sept. 3, 2020, 3:31 a.m. Intel is eager to pit its new 11th-generation Tiger Lake mobile processors against AMD's Ryzen equivalents, but not for the reasons you might think. Intel releases new versions of its Core laptop processors every year, and most years the company tends to talk up how much faster they are than the previous generation. But Wednesday's launch of its newest silicon, the 11th generation “Tiger Lake” chips, is different.
Intel Launches 11th Generation Core 'Tiger Lake' Laptop Processors
Intel’s next-generation Tiger Lake processors, unveiled this week, will bring refined artificial intelligence processing and dramatically improved graphics performance to new premium ultraportable laptops this fall.

Dell Latitude 9410 2-in-1
Aug. 29, 2020 The Latitude 9410 is one of two new 9000-series models that now form the top tier of Dell’s Latitude business-laptop lineup. They’re intended to be no-compromises machines for large enterprises that can afford to issue them to top executives as a perk. As a result, the 14-inch Latitude 9410 2-in-1 (starts at $1,829; $2,539 as tested) reviewed here offers significant cachet but few practical advantages over its more workaday and less expensive Latitude 7410 2-in-1 little sibling.

Lenovo Flex 5G
Aug. 4, 2020 Few laptops sold in the U.S. come with cellular connectivity as an option, and nearly all that do connect only to LTE networks, not the new 5G ones. But 2020 has seen the introduction of notebooks that can connect to 5G, like the Lenovo Flex 5G. It's a 2-in-1 convertible PC that promises gigabit speeds on Verizon's LTE and 5G networks, and its power-sipping Qualcomm Snapdragon processor helps ensure extraordinary battery life at the expense of occasionally sluggish performance.

It retains most of the simple, thoughtful design flourishes of the larger, more expensive 14-inch version that runs Windows 10. The Chrome operating system, an Intel Core i3 processor, and 64GB of flash-based storage help keep the price down, however.
Dell XPS 17 (2020)

How Might Apple's ARM Silicon Perform in Future Macs? We Ran Some Benchmarks!
Macs will begin ditching Intel’s chips in favor of Apple’s own silicon by the end of the year, the company announced this week as part of its WWDC keynote. But we don’t need to wait until then to take a stab at how the switchover is likely to affect the Mac’s computing performance.
The Best Laptops for Kids in 2020
