The best books on Venezuela
Venezuela has been in the news, with the arrest of its president, Nicolas Maduro, by the US. It has suffered decades of misgovernment and still has high levels of poverty, in spite of great oil wealth. Is Venezuela a classic example of a country devastated by the resource curse? Or is it much more complicated than that? It’s certainly a country which has been devastated by a resource curse, but the curse has also been a curse of mis-governance, rather than simply the curse of the commodity itself.
The Root Cause of Central American Migration Is US Imperialism
When we first heard about Vice President Kamala Harris’s plan to address the “root causes” of migration in Central America and Mexico, we thought she might actually engage with the history of US empire in the region. Rather than use her trip to Central America as a simple photo op, perhaps she would acknowledge the United States’ role in its troubled past and its reverberations into the present.

Etat espagnol-Catalogne.
Political Crisis in Venezuela
. The United States (US) government must cease interfering in Venezuelas internal politics, especially for the purpose of overthrowing the countrys government. Actions by the Donald Trump administration and its allies in the hemisphere are almost certain to make the situation in Venezuela worse, leading to unnecessary human suffering, violence, and instability. Venezuelas political polarisation is not new; the country has long been divided along racial and socio-economic lines.

Brinksmanship does little to resolve crisis in Venezuela | OUPblog
For over eighty days, the opposition has challenged the government of Nicolás Maduro and sought his ouster through direct street actions. Dramatic images of masked protestors violently clashing with the Venezuelan National Guard or the Bolivarian Police dominate western media reporting on the country. The mainstream US media creates the impression that the entire country is in open revolt and Maduro only holds on to power through the use of sheer repression.
‘Democracy, as Usual,’ in Venezuela
“Democracy as Usual, in Caracas,” The New York Times editorialized in December 1983. “Some events deserve notice because they are unremarkable, the democratic succession in Venezuela, for example.” Noting that military dictators had ruled the country until 1958, the editorial celebrated the successive election of four presidents.
How has Venezuela's foreign policy changed in the 21st century? | OUPblog
How did the election of Chávez transform foreign relations? Having functioned largely in the US political sphere of influence for most of the twentieth century, Venezuela sought to chart its own course in international affairs after the election of 1998. Since 1999, the Venezuelan government has pursued new foreign policy initiatives, advanced the idea of a multipolar world, assumed a greater role on the international stage, and promoted hemispheric integration.
