Have you ever used a typewriter?
Sure, as a kid. But I'm not hauling one around the country and setting it up in campgrounds.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Laptop, MS Word, internet, books, research articles, camera, lenses, Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop, kayak, bike, boots, camper, truck.
Why did you become a journalist?
I had a long interest in writing, particularly narrative storytelling. Some of my work is creative first-person and some is journalistic
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Try writing everything you can and see what sticks.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Email anytime.
What's your favorite drink?
I love water when it comes in the form of beer.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?
What's an adventure writer? I cover many topics--travel, outdoors, parks, history, space, etc--with an adventurous spin.
