The UK funding crisis may just see the emergence of a…
PA Consulting’s latest survey of university leaders makes clear that, rather than wait for government direction, vice-chancellors and their teams are recognising that they are best placed – with both the agency and the vision – to build their own futures amid near-unanimous agreement about the scale of the challenges facing the sector.
We should have anticipated higher education's 'Grey Rhinos'
This blog is contributed by Dr Gert Jan Sheurwater, Director of Strategy and Foresight at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and Mike Boxall, an independent consultant and regular contributor to HEPI blogs. It is not difficult, with the power of hindsight, to identify the three Grey Rhinos, and institutions’ responses to them, that have underpinned the current crisis facing UK universities.
Magical Hat no Buttobi Turbo! Daibōken
The Good The bosses - Not too easy, not too hard. The controls - Ducking on a slope, jumping on an enemies head, "gliding". Power ups - Killing enemies on screen, shield, jumping higher, longer punch, turning into a helicopter or a submarine, turning into a mechanical ape which makes you invincible to boss attacks and have amazing firepower (though the controls are a lot more sluggish) what more could you want?! The Bad One hit from an enemy and you either lose your egg-buddy or you die. Simple as.
A sustainable future for UK HE needs shared vision –… | PA Consulting
Universities’ own institutional responses to falling real-terms revenues and rising costs differ little from previous years. They mostly focus on seeking short-term gains from established patterns of higher education business. Examples include growing student enrolments and associated revenues from both domestic and, especially, overseas markets; cutting back on low-demand courses; attracting more research grants and contracts; and cutting professional staffing.

Sia Partners UK CEO on thriving in the new normal
When the full economic impact of the coronavirus lockdown kicked in, Irene Molodtsov remained upbeat. The UK CEO of Sia Partners, a management consultancy employing 1,800 staff across 16 countries, says the experience of seeing her own business recover from a major shock, allows her to think positively about the current challenges. “I have been here before- emotionally,” she says.
It's the people, stupid!
Image: Steve Heap, via Shutterstock Universities must become proactive players in the employment and skills ecosystem if they are to thrive after the election. A visiting Martian, observing the battle between the main political parties to outdo or rubbish each other’s pledges of multi-billion-pound spending sprees, could be forgiven for assuming the problems that need to be resolved through this general election are all about money.
Are Tender Frameworks the way to go?
Procurement So, you’re reviewing your finance system and decided it’s time you hear from new suppliers. But what procurement route do you plan on taking? It’s understandable if you might be leaning towards the framework route. It’s the safe option. You’re a finance professional, not a procurement expert. And with the documentation all created for you it will surely save countless hours.
To send e-invoices to the Public Administration or not to send… that is the question!
Procurement Today, Europe’s eyes are turned towards the United Kingdom and its final decision regarding the Brexit impasse, which will definitely affect thousands of entrepreneurs doing business on British territory. Many of them, involved in public tender procedures, wonder what the procurement process will look like after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union, and whether it will still be possible to bill UK public administration entities via e-invoice.
Online purchasing can save businesses hundreds of pounds..per item!
Procurement A huge expense to all businesses that is often overlooked is the cost of essential day to day items. While many purchasing departments simply contact suppliers in order to replenish items such as pens, paper or ink, they often use multiple providers for these types of basic products, making the process more disjointed and far less cost-effective than it ought to be. So how can businesses streamline the process and save money at the same time? The answer lies in digital procurement.
To buy or build data management solutions? Why outsourcing can be best way forward
Procurement Systems & Software The debate continues to rage across financial services: is it ‘better’ to build solutions internally, or buy them from an external solutions provider? A recent survey commissioned by Asset Control, polling decision-makers in financial services organisations in the US and Europe, found firms cautiously optimistic about ROI timescales for internally-developed solutions.
Benchmarking? It’s not just about cost
Procurement Benchmarking is too often treated as an exercise in cost reduction. Bring the topic up with consultants and conversation will typically drift towards the price of services across different sites and how they compare with an industry standard. While this idea captures the practice in its broadest terms, it also overlooks the scope for more profound changes, especially in the support services sector.
