How Nevadans Can Prepare for Death with Dignity and Intention
Blaise Jorgensen regularly meets with clients to discuss end of life matters and important documents. Absent from every polite conversation are three subjects: religion, politics, and money. Most readers can doubtless call to mind a strict mother or stern boss who might purse their lips and cast a withering glance at anyone broaching these topics in mixed company. Some might add an honorary fourth taboo topic to Miss Manners’ list of conversational no-no’s: death.

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... One week ago, a federal immigration agent shot and killed American citizen Renee Nicole Good, during ongoing immigration raids in Minneapolis. Just a few days later, the community in Northern Nevada gathered to voice their opposition to the killing and the actions being taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the Trump administration.

Editor’s Note: The following is part of a series from the Sierra Nevada Ally, called Vet Voices, where military veterans in our region share their diverse perspectives, experiences, and ideas–in their own words. Ask the average American what they think of when someone says “the South,” and you might get images of historical plantation homes, sweet tea, agricultural fields…and Republican political strongholds. Since the 1980s, most southern states have reliably voted conservative.
Radon: Silent but Deadly Gas – Sierra Nevada Ally
Wyatt Denny is the radon mitigation program manager with Pinnacle Construction Consultants. The title may seem innocuous enough, but the job is serious. “I’ve seen teenage kids die or have lung cancer,” Denny said. “These kids weren’t smoking, and there’s no reason for them to have lung cancer.” Denny is talking about radon, an odorless and toxic gas.
Democracy needs systems, not saviors – Sierra Nevada Ally
In 1975, on the eve of our nation’s bicentennial, Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman made a statement that still rings true today. “I do not believe that the solution to our problem is simply to elect the right people. The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing.
Ballot question brings nonpartisan into primary voting process
Did you hear the news? “Nonpartisan voters are officially the largest group of registered voters in Nevada, according to July voter registration data released earlier this month. They make up nearly one-third of the electorate and outnumber registered Democrats and Republicans,” according to The Nevada Independent. As a Nevada military veteran and nonpartisan (independent) voter, this doesn’t surprise me at all.
