I used a typewriter as a kid in the late 1970s/early 1980s, before I got my Commodore 64!

How is social media changing news?

Social media makes it easier for journalists to find sources and to stay "plugged in" to what's happening with the newsmakers they cover.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Lois Lane.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means you're at the forefront of informing the public and keeping those in power in check.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Via email.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Laptop, smartphone, video camera, digital recorder, Final Cut Pro.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter.

Who do you wish followed you?

I'd like to be followed by potential news sources and anyone interested in learning about the goings-on of Detroit and Michigan.

Why did you become a journalist?

I became a journalist because I love storytelling, and I believe in the strength and value of an informed populace.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes. I covered general news and sports, including the football team.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'm most proud of covering the journey of Travis Mills, a soldier who lost all four limbs in Afghanistan and maintains a positive attitude.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Write, write, write. It's the only way to get better at your craft and to create a portfolio that you'll need when applying for jobs.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime of the day or night via email, which I check regularly.
