We urge Cherokee voters to vote no on June 15. We can keep what works while reserving the people’s right to amend the constitution at any time. On June 15 Cherokee Nation voters will be asked whether to call a convention to review and potentially change our entire Cherokee Nation Constitution. Our constitution provides three paths to amending it. First, the Council can vote to place individual amendments on the ballot for the voters to consider (the council has done so twice since 2007).

Custer had his scouts. Governor Stitt has Wes Nofire. As Speaker of the Council of the Cherokee Nation, I had a front row seat to observe Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt’s new Native American Liaison, Mr. Nofire, while he served on the Council. What I saw should terrify anyone who supports tribal sovereignty because Mr. Nofire opposes it. In his four years on the Council of the Cherokee Nation, Mr. Nofire had the opportunity to work on some of the historic legislation the Council enacted.
