Stegall issues farewell awards
By Mike Stegall Darke Co. Commission “THE MEASURE OF WHO WE ARE IS WHAT WE DO WITH WHAT WE HAVE” – VINCE LOMBARDI. That is my favorite quote. All of us look back on our life and wonder if what we have done has been purposeful, and have we done the best we could with what we had? In everything I have done I have tried to do it to the best of my ability. That is how my brother Dan, and I were raised, if it was worth doing, do it the best you could.
When you play to win
From the Sidelines By Mike Stegall “YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!” I am writing this on Monday, Nov. 8, after all the football games on Sunday. I know there is still the Monday Night game, the Chicago Bears versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, but after yesterday’s bizarre happenings, I wanted to comment on something that a famous player and coach once said. On Oct.
The fall trip to tee off
From the Sidelines By Mike Stegall Fall, the prettiest time of year! The air is fresh, the grass is still green, the leaves are turning color, and the humidity is gone. Most people I know enjoy fall the most… to me, however, it just means that cold weather is just around the corner, and I hate cold weather. As my age advances it seems that when it gets below 50 degrees, I freeze to death! I hate cold! Those who love it will say “OH, BUT IT KILLS ALL THE BUGS FOR NEXT YEAR!” Really?
The lack of officials and how to solve it
From the Sidelines By Mike Stegall By now, most people have heard there is a shortage of high school officials in all sports. There have been cancellations, delays and other problems due to a lack of qualified football, baseball, softball and other officials. If you go to a high school game you will probably notice that the age of the officials is getting older each year, and that you do not see many younger men or women taking their place.
An unxpected Ryder Cup romp
From the Sidelines By Mike Stegall This past weekend saw a lot of sports on television. I think I watched just about everything except soccer and baseball. It was all there for me; NASCAR, IMSA racing, high school football, pro football, college football, and of course golf. This was no ordinary weekend for golf, this was the week of the Ryder Cup.
The All-American — and me! - Daily Advocate & Early Bird News
From the Sidelines By Mike Stegall When I was working in radio in Wilmington, Ohio (WDHK) I was fortunate enough to be there and have a sports show every day. I was the only person who had a radio program live from the football field with legendary coach and owner of the Bengals, Paul Brown. I got the chance to interview quite a few famous athletes because of that program, Bengals and other team’s members too, and I also got to meet a lot of the Reds players.
Don’t blame the officials — coach better! - Daily Advocate & Early Bird News
By Mike Stegall From the Sidelines Monday evening I watched the Ole Miss/Louisville game on television. I was much more impressed with the improvement in the Ole Miss defense because last year they were dead last in overall defense in the FBS series! Last! Out of 128 teams! That’s bad! They looked like they were much more disciplined, and more aggressive. Louisville was mostly ineffective on offense for much of the first half, but got a little better in the second half.
1971 — 50 years later - Daily Advocate & Early Bird News
Thursday night, Aug. 19, The Greenville High School honored the 1971 undefeated football team. I was a part of that team. I must admit that I hadn’t even thought of it being 50 years ago that I was playing high school football. The 1971 team was a special group, not because we were unbeaten, but because of the people who were on that team, the coaches we had, and what we have become.

2017 is about to expire, and as most of us do, we look back on the past year. We look back hopefully so we do not make the same mistakes we made, and to remember what we did well that will help in the future. Overall, I think things went very well in 2017, and I have no complaints as to what transpired, nor do I have many regrets. This was certainly a year of change and struggle, surprises and disappointments, and hopes and dreams completed and unfulfilled.

We submit this for public information about concerns and information as it pertains to the upcoming communication (MARCS) levy or ISSUE 3 on the November 7 ballot. · The Commissioners were asked to put this on the ballot by the communications committee for a vote from the county because the Commissioners are the only authority within the county to provide funds to ALL the entities throughout the county, like villages and emergency service departments.

I heard an incredible statistic last week, one that makes you really stop and think. It stated that the United States has 4 percent of the world’s population, but 80 percent of the world’s opioid use! That is just mind-numbingly awful. I also saw where Dayton, Ohio is the number one city in America from drug deaths per capita. That is just 35 miles south of us here in Darke County. This problem is not exclusive to just us, this is a nationwide epidemic. The question is what should we do about it?

September 22 is the official first day of Autumn. Autumn means cooler weather, high school football is going strong, and it won’t be long until leaves are falling, crops are coming off, bonfires, and preparations for the three big holidays, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas are getting underway. This year has really flown by, and in some cases that’s a good thing.

August has come and gone. Hot, humid weather, followed by flash rain storms and in some places flooding, the start of high school football, schools going back in session, and of course, the nine-day run of the Great Darke County Fair.
Farewell to a friend
This past week Marc Saluk, the Darke County Economic Development Director, resigned from his position to take a similar position in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Marc is going home. Marc is from the Philadelphia area, and his new job gets him about 50 miles away. I can’t blame him for leaving, it is what he wants, and we all like familiar places. Since Marc has been here, Marc and I have worked on a lot of things together. I bet he won’t remember the first time we actually talked to each other?
What to do with Marvin?
On Jan. 9, 2016, at 8:15 p.m., the Cincinnati Bengals may have played their last playoff game for a while. The NFL is an ever-changing landscape with the draft, free agency, retirements, injuries, franchise moves, coaches leaving and TV contracts. Every team is affected every year; the Bengals are no exception. They have 16 free agents this year including Leon Hall, Andre Smith, Reggie Nelson, Vince Rey, Adam Jones, Marvin Jones and other starters.
