March Bad-Weather Case of Crabcakes
I'm all kinds of crabby. Tired of being cold. Tired of not being able to feel my face. And desperate for some sunshine. Things that have added to my mood? 1. Able-bodied pedestrians hogging the elevator (I am required to use w a bike) when I JUST missed it (making me wait 5 more minutes in the cold) and no one moved to reopen the doors. After I wished I had yelled, "You are all going to HELL!" but alas, that's a little too mean for me. 2.
Divvy could get $50M expansion, including e-assist and dockless bikes in all 50 wards
The proposal would add 175 new stations and an additional 10,500 new bikes. (The current system has 6,000 bikes). The bikes would include e-assist and a hybrid locking system that allows use in Divvy docks, or locking to regular bike racks. Lyft (who owns Motivate, which currently operates Divvy) would be guaranteed exclusive rights to continue operating the only bike share service in Chicago for 9 years, plus they would get advertising rights.
plastic bollards on Halsted b/t Chicago and Division
Anyone know why the removed the plastic bollards on Halsted between Chicago and Division? Does it have something to do with the fact that the Chicago Ave. bridge is now re-opened? I'm not sure why they wouldn't just leave these. Even though cars would still drive in the bus/bike only lane with the bollards installed, I have to think that removing them will only worsen the problem. Bike Lanes
Going over some old photos and looking at some new threads and saw a couple pics from Detroit that have bike lanes in them or spots for biking? Hard to tell from the pics since I haven't lived there in almost 20 years but the Bollards are grouped and parking bumpers parallel to the street is something that would be great in Chicago. If there's one thing Detroit knows is cars and how they occupy every single space they can and then how to keep them from being in bike lanes.

How often do you smell weed on your commute?
I ride Halsted for roughly 5 miles every day. I smell the reefer from cars or pedestrians one or two times each commute. Tags: Share Tweet Facebook Facebook Views: 282 ▶ Reply to This
Elston Protected Bike Lane--Zero Maintenance Zone
Are they any other regular users of the newish Elston protected bike lanes...north of Milwaukee ave? I've been a bit deflated (pun intended) by the amount of debris and glass, and general total absence of maintenance to the Elston bike lanes. Before the bike lanes, that roadway benefitted from very regular street sweeping. Now, the bike lanes have been sectioned off, and are a bit of a glassy mess. Does anyone who reads this blog have a relationship with city officials responsible for maintenance?
Elston Protected Bike Lane--Zero Maintenance Zone
Oh for sure Yasmeen, I don't want to tax photography in the parks or park use at all either - I think the need for the money just came up in the discussion of how to fund getting these lanes cleaned in a city with so much debt. (This sort of got rolling as we lamented that our bike lanes particularly the PBLs aren't especially clear now that the street sweeping season is over and the PBL cleaning has a unique logistics problem.

Why Do We So Readily Blame the Victim?
We all see distracted drivers riding our bikes. They are everywhere. And yet, when posting (on Facebook) a very disturbing account of a tour bus driver on his phone when he killed two pedestrians in DC, there was the knee-jerk reaction to blame the victims. Accusing them of being on their phones. And screaming in all-caps that we all need to "CALMMMMM down". Clearly, the woman responding to the FB post had not read the article to learn anything about the crash.
Angry City.
Where to begin with this? i don't know where you ride, but i find your take on drivers' courtesy rather elitist and classist, verging on racist. Have you cycled in a "third world " country? i do a lot of cycling through some pretty well-to-do neighbourhoods, and also some pretty hardscrabble towns and rural areas, and i have no way of knowing how "educated" or "acculturated" any given driver may be.

When I lived in Wisconsin, you had the polite people and the jerks (bottle throwing, swerving, no room on rural roads, getting yelled at). When I lived in Highland Park, same (no bottle throwing, just assholes) - the kind people and the jerks - and that's when I also encountered the jerk groups of cyclists on weekend mornings. Moving to Chicago - same thing. Kind drivers who follow the rules, and jerk drivers who don't care about others. Which group of immigrants are you referring to?

I ask myself all the time why I continue to ride in this city. Everyone is so angry and only worried about themselves. It’s all about me before you. Why do we continue to ride when there is so much hatred/anger/obviluousness to human life as cyclists and pedestrians? Tags: Share Tweet Facebook Facebook Views: 717 ▶ Reply to This
