Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Writing for Entrepreneur Magazine. That led to being a judge on "Elevator Pitch" - it's like Shark Tank with a heart.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. I took old-school typing lessons and was the fastest male typist in my class. I grew up with a manual typewriter. Ka-Ching!
How is social media changing news?
It's much easier for new talent to build and monetize a platform without constraints
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
In order: Jon Stewart. Stephen Colbert. Ron Burgundy. Chevy Chase on SNL. Should I continue?
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Curiosity. Transparency. Integrity. Authenticity. Trustworthy. True to your passion and instincts. Never be boring. Go deep. Multimedia.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
#GirlsWithHugePussies - it's a subreddit of women holding HUGE cats. Absolutely hilarious pictures and comments.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Send a short video. I want to feel your passion, excitement and charisma. Tell me a transformational story that makes me laugh or cry.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I work in my home video studio. iMac Pro, 5 cameras, LiveStream and Ecamm for video. Look on YouTube for a video tour. I'm a gearhead!
What's your favorite social network?
Reddit. Then YouTube. Not a fan of Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. I don't lick toilets.
Who do you wish followed you?
Elon Musk. I'm friends with most of the people I admire.
Why did you become a journalist?
Growing up, I loved Johnny Carson and talk shows. I imagined myself interviewing celebrities and interesting people. Now I have my own shows!
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Nope. Honestly, I didn't dig the people doing the newspaper, yearbook or "play people." I don't do drama.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My new book, "The Superpower Accelerator." 30+ years of business wisdom. My podcasts with Dan Sullivan & Gay Hendricks.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Ask better questions. Find out why, why, why. Good deep. Earn the right to interview anyone and everyone.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime. As long as it's interesting, well thought out, and grabs my attention. Be different. Be creative. Research my platform.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
It's the "One Word Offer" from Dan Sullivan. Better than.a pitch, I wanted the result. Look for the podcast interview on Capability Amplifie.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
A multilevel marketing newbie with nothing unique or special to offer. Sell me a pen! Make it interesting! (look it up)
What's your favorite drink?
Non-alcoholic - Dirty Chai with Vanilla Oat Milk. Alcoholic - Skinny Margarita.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On my Peloton, electric bike, or La Jolla Shores at my beach house in sunny San Diego!
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I'm a Reddit lover. I've curated a fabulous set of subreddits that are endlessly fascinating. Never a dull moment. Lots of laughs.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That I'm just a business guy. I'm interested in nearly anything and willing to go as deep and transparent as you're able.
