Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I worked for my college newspaper, usually covering chapel talks & concerts, before interning in public TV, then a paid job in public radio.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, but not for work. I'm enough of a journalism and literature romantic to think typewriters are kind of great.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Clark Kent. He could conquer the world as Superman, but chooses to do the right thing in his civilian life, keeping the public informed.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Being a journalist means telling the public the truth.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email works, but get to the point. I shouldn't have to read a 10-paragraph press release to figure out what's going on.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter, because it lets you connect with anyone in an efficient, meaningful, fun way. It's a great way to get to know someone.
Why did you become a journalist?
I want to make the world a better place, and I think keeping people informed and giving them the truth is a piece of that.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Thursdays or Fridays, as that's the beginning of my week.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The Bulwark
