Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Probably The Marketing Society, in 2013
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Not really, no
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
I can't remember. Twitter is kind of dead these days
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By work email. But keep it short and sweet. And ask for our framework as a magazine in terms of what we cover.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
WordPress, Google sheets, Google docs, Gmail, Gimp (for images), Audacity (for podcast editing)
What's your favorite social network?
Probably Tiktok. But I like to fly the flag for Tumblr when I can.
Who do you wish followed you?
I'm not that bothered about followers, to be honest
Why did you become a journalist?
I slightly fell into it. I was in marketing in publishing and it slowly became more and more content driven.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No. I don't think there was one, going to a comprehensive school in England in the 90s
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I did a good interview with Crunchyroll at one point, and a podcast with Riot Games. And I've written articles about niche streaming platforms like Shudder, and smaller music streamers like Tidal.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be interested in everything. Or as many areas as you can be.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
Hard to say, to be honest. Something that feels a unique take on a subject tends to catch my eye
What's your favorite drink?
Tea
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
It's Nice That sometimes has nice stuff. And it's good that The Face magazine has returned in a digital way
