Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Definitely! Learned to type on a manual typewriter.

How is social media changing news?

By creating more narrow markets based on identity & political beliefs, forcing writers to write for a narrow audience instead of "the public"

What does it mean to be a journalist?

There are different forms of journalism. Sometimes I approach it as a science writer, explaining the research. Sometimes I write editorials.

Why did you become a journalist?

Writing is a side gig, so I'm not technically a journalist, but I like to write and like to read and think deeply about things.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was sports editor and then co-editor-in-chief.

What's your favorite drink?

How is this relevant? If the point is to humanize the writers, ask about favorite books or movies.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Basketball court, running, camping.
