Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
n/a
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, I especially enjoyed trying out a 1920 typewriter that my grandmother left us. You have to pound the keys.
How is social media changing news?
Facts are harder to discern because there is often a barrage of conflicting information. Clear citations & disclosure of any bias = trust.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
I enjoyed Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler. It was dark, of course, but it reminded me of the importance of instinct at a startup.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
An unrelenting curiosity for the truth; an ability to be a storyteller; a skill for making facts sing.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Maybe #NotTheOnion?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
On social, ping us at Mediabistro or pitch us at editor@mediabistro.com.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Google suite, Claude, Motion, Wordpress, Excel, Gemini.
What's your favorite social network?
X. It's the closest thing we have to a real-time newsroom where everyone's invited.
Who do you wish followed you?
n/a
Why did you become a journalist?
I didn't, and am ill-suited for the (very noble) profession.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, I didn't.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I'm not a journalist, but I have done a lot of blogging for Recruiter.com, which I founded. And now, Mediabistro.com.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Develop a niche expertise, as trust and experience are both harder-earned and better rewarded now.
When's the best time to pitch you?
8am
What's the best pitch you ever got?
We covered an early Facebook recruiting story before they were, well, what they are now.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Heavily anchor-texted spam from B2B software companies.
What's your favorite drink?
Coffee!
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
At the gym, reading a book, or on business travel.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
WSJ, The Information.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
No beat, I'm on the business side. But to pick one, that AI will kill media careers, because I think the opposite will happen.
