DCVC co-leads Emerald AI’s $ 150 million Series A round to transform data centers into intelligent grid-responsive assets
Last May in a hyperscale facility outside Phoenix, a GPU cluster dropped its power draw by 25 percent and held steady for three hours while the local grid rode out a demand spike. The jobs running on it kept their service level agreement (SLA) guarantees. No training runs were killed, no backup diesel generators turned on, the cluster drew less electricity, the surge passed, and the cluster ramped back up to full capacity.
Welcoming Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel Luis Bacalao to DCVC
We are excited to announce that Luis Bacalao has joined DCVC as Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel. Luis has been in venture capital since 2016, when he joined Khosla Ventures as Assistant General Counsel. He then served as General Counsel of Y Combinator’s Continuity Fund before returning to Khosla Ventures as an Operating Partner focusing on special projects.
When the incumbent joins the insurgent: Former Cummins CEO takes the helm at Mainspring
Tom Linebarger ran Cummins for a decade, capping thirty years at the hundred-year-old power giant. When a leader like that leaves to run a company a fraction of the size, it says something about where electric power is headed. Recently, Mainspring Energy named Tom its new CEO. “I’ve spent my career guiding Cummins through multiple technology inflections, and I know what it looks like when a solution is about to become indispensable,” Tom told us.
DCVC DTOR 2025: One way to stop adding carbon to the air is to get…
The 2025 edition of the DCVC Deep Tech Opportunities Report, released in June, explains the global challenges we see as the most critical and the possible solutions we hope to advance through our investing. This is a condensed version of the second section of the report’s third chapter. Nature has an efficient way to use sunlight, air, and water to create hydrocarbons: it’s called photosynthesis.
Fervo raises $462M to power the grid’s zero-carbon future
When we led Fervo’s Series C in 2022, it was because we believed enhanced geothermal could become a cornerstone of 24⁄7 carbon-free power and this was the team to make it happen. Today, that conviction is being validated at scale. Fervo has just closed an oversubscribed $462 million Series E, which DCVC supported — a milestone that reflects how far the company has come and how urgently the market needs what it’s building. See Wall Street Journal coverage here.
Fulfil’s robot revolution comes to Whole Foods
In a Philadelphia suburb, the future of online grocery just went live. DCVC portfolio company Fulfil has deployed its fully autonomous micro-fulfillment technology at a Whole Foods Market location, marking a watershed moment for both grocery automation and customer experience. The timing couldn’t be better. U.S. online grocery sales now total about $120 billion annually and are expected to keep growing through 2028—three times faster than in-store sales. Yet profitability remains elusive.
DCVC DTOR 25: Deep tech will solidify the United States’ advantage as…
The stockpiling of goods like appliances and clothing is what enables the cornucopia of instant choice to which we’ve become accustomed in the internet era. But in aggregate, an enormous amount of energy and raw materials — in the form of cloth, plastic, metal, motors, circuit boards, and the like — is locked up in these goods. What if there were a lower-impact way to provide the same flexibility?
DCVC DTOR 2025: Introduction
In terms of the value added to global GDP by its manufacturing sector — that is, the value of outputs, minus the cost of inputs — the U.S. ranks second in the world, surpassed only by China. “People don’t realize that the United States is, in fact, a leader in manufacturing,” says Zachary Bogue, co-founder and managing partner at DCVC.
Automated, localized, fast: why a top apparel leader is getting…
DCVC: What initially drew you to Unspun’s product and mission? Blakeslee: To this day, with all the progress we’ve made in robotics and automation and AI, sewing garments is one thing that has been virtually unaffected. One way to avoid that is by not having seams at all. I’ve seen tubular garment manufacturing many times over the years, because in the t‑shirt world, there was a time when every t‑shirt was tubular, meaning it had no side seam, so you have a straight tube top to bottom.
Lumafield raises $75 million to give manufacturers a look deep inside…
Superheroes are a tired trope in the tech industry, but some companies we invest in really are developing superpowers. Lumafield is bringing affordable and practical Computed Tomography (CT) technology — real-life x‑ray spex for engineers — to the factory floor, offering industrial decision-makers a high-resolution, non-destructive, and highly valuable way to see inside their products during prototyping and when they eventually roll off their lines.
CH4 Global opens the world's first commercial-scale Asparagopsis…
When DCVC first invested in CH4 Global only four years ago, we saw something revolutionary: a company that had developed a practical, scalable solution to one of the most acute causes of climate change — the methane-laced burps from cattle that account for roughly a third of all anthropogenic methane emissions.
DCVC announces incubation of Circularity Fuels
Tomorrow’s best ideas are often today’s best ideas inverted. The Earth revolves around the sun, not the other way around; genes propagate through natural selection, not through acquired traits; time is relative, not absolute. In that vein, DCVC is proud to announce its incubation of Circularity Fuels, a company built around its own inversion — of the rocket engine.
Alta debuts with $5.1 million Seed to sustainably separate critical…
Like energy, food, and water, mined metals are essential inputs for nearly every aspect of modern life. From the rare earth elements that power electric vehicles and consumer electronics to the magnesium that is vital for lightweighting transportation, we depend heavily on the products of mining. But as global demand for these materials skyrockets, the U.S. faces a serious supply crunch. We remain highly reliant on imports, and shortages loom if we fail to act.
Climate tech’s lemons-to-lemonade moment: how the private sector can…
In January, President Trump could very well shut down the Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office and will probably unwind elements of the CHIPS Act and Inflation Reduction Act, the major contributions of the Biden Administration towards advancing U.S. clean tech and manufacturing.
Twelve raises $645M to turn CO2 into sustainable jet fuel
Today, with its announcement of a massive TPG-led $645 million in new investment, Twelve has received emphatic validation for its singular approach to turning waste CO2 into products that can decarbonize entire industries. From the start, we have believed that Twelve’s groundbreaking technology may prove dispositive in the fight against climate change.
