Soil carbon gains from salt marsh recovery in China
Abstract Coastal salt marshes in China, one of the few countries to achieve net salt marsh gains in recent decades, are important blue carbon ecosystems. However, the lack of national-scale assessments of salt marsh changes and associated soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics limits our understanding of their climate mitigation potential. Here we show how remote sensing and machine learning quantify changes in salt marsh area and surface SOC across China.
Global blue carbon losses from salt marshes exceed restoration gains
Abstract Salt marsh soil organic carbon (SOC) is a key blue carbon pool affected by both disturbance and restoration; yet its long-term global dynamics remains poorly understood. Here we provide the global assessment of surface SOC changes in salt marshes from 2002 to 2019, combining multi-source remote sensing imagery with the machine learning calibrated by field observations.
Component-specific shifts in soil respiration and its temperature sensitivity following natural forest conversion
Abstract Natural forest conversion profoundly alters soil respiration, yet its differential effects on autotrophic and heterotrophic components and their temperature sensitivity (Q10) remain unresolved globally. Here we synthesize 452 paired observations from 164 field studies, showing that soil respiration declines by 7.0% following forest conversion, primarily driven by a pronounced reduction in autotrophic respiration (−26.8%), whereas heterotrophic respiration exhibits no consistent response.

Drought may exacerbate dryland soil inorganic carbon loss under warming climate conditions - Nature Communications
Abstract Low moisture conditions result in substantially more soil inorganic carbon (SIC) than soil organic carbon (SOC) in drylands. However, whether and how changes in moisture affect the temperature response of SIC in drylands are poorly understood. Here, we report that the temperature sensitivity of SIC dissolution increases but that of SOC decomposition decreases with increasing natural aridity from 30 dryland sites along a 4,500 km aridity gradient in northern China.
Relative increases in CH4 and CO2 emissions from wetlands under global warming dependent on soil carbon substrates - Nature Geoscience
Abstract Compelling evidence has shown that wetland methane emissions are more temperature dependent than carbon dioxide emissions across diverse hydrologic conditions. However, the availability of carbon substrates, which ultimately determines microbial carbon metabolism, has not been adequately accounted for.

The thermal response of soil microbial methanogenesis decreases in magnitude with changing temperature
Abstract Microbial methanogenesis in anaerobic soils contributes greatly to global methane (CH4) release, and understanding its response to temperature is fundamental to predicting the feedback between this potent greenhouse gas and climate change. A compensatory thermal response in microbial activity over time can reduce the response of respiratory carbon (C) release to temperature change, as shown for carbon dioxide (CO2) in aerobic soils.
Global synthesis of effects of plant species diversity on trophic groups and interactions
Abstract Numerous studies have demonstrated that plant species diversity enhances ecosystem functioning in terrestrial ecosystems, including diversity effects on insects (herbivores, predators and parasitoids) and plants. However, the effects of increased plant diversity across trophic levels in different ecosystems and biomes have not yet been explored on a global scale.
Comment on “Unexpected reversal of C3 versus C4 grass response to elevated CO2 during a 20-year field experiment”
Reich et al. (1) presented results of a long-term free-air CO enrichment experiment. The results showed that elevated CO (eCO ) favored C grasses rather than C grasses during the first 12 years; however, the pattern reversed during the subsequent eight years.
Enantioselective Palladium-Catalyzed Diboration of 1,1-Disubstituted Allenes
A practical and enantioselective palladium-catalyzed diboration of 1,1-disubstituted allenes is developed by employing a P-chiral monophosphorus ligand BI-DIME to form a series of diboronic esters containing a chiral tertiary boronic ester moiety in excellent yields and ee’s with the palladium loading as low as 0.2 mol %.
