Good Company | Opinion
Having two books released during the pandemic wasn't a disaster for the author, as Nye found the "positive contagion" of books and poetry was not only still there, it was connecting more young readers and writers from different places around the world. As one of the many writers who had a new book (or two, in my case) emerge during the dubious year of 2020, I knew the echo of that resounding thud that greeted its arrival.
When Animals Are Used as Stand-ins for Transgender Humans, People are Diminished | Essay
Parrish Turner, a transgender sensitivity reader, is tired of the tropes surrounding animal stories, particularly those involving the wish to be a different animal. For Parrish, the longing to be a more authentic version of oneself is all too human. As a transgender sensitivity reader, I have been noticing a troubling pattern; to tell the truth, I am tired of reading picture books about animals. Usually, these have some plot about an animal, say a bear, wanting to be another animal, say a tiger.
Be Who You Needed When You Were Younger | Opinion
Author Phil Bildner shares a meaningful moment with a young reader during a school visit early last year. This happened less than a year ago. I’ve shared this story a few times but never like this. I was on my book tour for my new middle grade novel, A High Five for Glenn Burke. I was visiting an elementary school in the Denver area. I’d been invited to speak with their fourth graders. It wasn’t lost on me that I was speaking with fourth graders.
Listening to One Another in Our Nation of Stories
In a time of such fear and division, author Deborah Wiles believes that part of the solution to the anger and worry is to activiely listen to others. Last winter, as I spoke at the NCTE and ALA Midwinter conferences, I was preparing to tour for my latest book, Kent State. It would publish on April 21, 2020, two weeks before the Deborah Wiles.
An Author
The author of Other Words for Home wants her books to be springboards for childen to have important discussions. I’ve been thinking a lot about time travel lately. Partly because we are stuck in a year of epic disasters—2020—and partly because my newest book, The Shape of Thunder, explores the concept. And also, because, you see, I believe writing for young people is a certain form of time travel. I know, I know, but stay with me.
Stitching up our mouths
The first copies of the paperback edition of The Book of Untruths have arrived and again I am awake for hours in the night. This has happened before. A sleeplessness which is kicked off by the unintended consequences of writing a life. Needing soothed I message the poet Joanne Limburg, who has given much thought to the ethics of memoir. Joanne is the author of Small Pieces and we meet in a cafe, our table surrounded by students on laptops with stopped ears.
Librarians Cannot Self-Censor or Capitulate To “George” Complaints | Opinion
Alex Gino’s novel George is suddenly among the most requested books in my district’s libraries. Students have checked it out all along, but now several principals and teachers want a copy as well.
