1 Introduction Permafrost in northern peatlands covers almost 12% of the total Pan-Arctic permafrost area [1]. In these landscapes, permafrost distribution is typically fragmented, spanning discontinuous to sporadic zones, and occurs mainly in individual palsas and peat plateaus (also called plateau palsas) [2]. The distribution of these palsas is governed by interactions among climate, hydrology, vegetation, and morphology.
